PLAYER OF THE GAME: Joel Cornette, who got things started with an alley-oop from Mike Monserez and scored Butler's first seven points. He finished with a game-high 14 points and three steals along with five rebounds. Although JC did commit six turnovers, he was 4-of-6 from the free throw line. Honorable mention goes to Duane Lightfoot, Jr., who once again played very well off the bench. Duane had 10 points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes.
The scoring was very balanced for the Bulldogs. Monserez had eight points, Brandon Miller and Darnell Archey each finished with seven, and Lewis Curry and Avery Sheets had six points apiece. Jeff James made a lay-up for two points, and had a blocked shot in the second half that might still have some people shaking their heads in disbelief. His athleticism continues to impress. Wayne State was led by Justin Chapman's eight points.
There were rough spots--for the second straight game, Butler committed more turnovers than its opponent--but as coach Lickliter said afterwards, "It's hard to be disappointed with a win." He acknowledged that there are things that need to be improved upon, but in a game where you win by 23, shoot 53% and hold your opponent to 32% (and just 15 second half points), and outrebound your opponent by 10, there were certainly plenty of things that went well.
Up next for Butler is a game that many fans on both sides have been looking forward to--Ball State. Butler defeated the then-ranked Cardinals on their home floor a year ago, and BSU will no doubt have revenge on their minds. That task may be a bit tougher for them, however, as it is being reported that star senior forward Theron Smith will sit out the remainder of the year as a medical redshirt as he continues to recover from a knee injury. Regardless, expect a highly-motivated Cardinal team and plenty of rowdy Ball State fans at Hinkle this Saturday. Game time is Saturday, November 30, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
