It was a different story for the Bulldogs after halftime. Butler scored 18 of the first 23 points in the second half and took control of the game. After struggling in the first half, The Bulldogs shot the lights out from three-point range, hitting at an incredible 8-for-9 clip (89%). Brandon Miller and Avery Sheets were particularly deadly, each hitting some deep treys to put the game out of reach. UWGB never seriously threatened Butler in the second half, and the Bulldogs cruised to a 68-53 victory.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Miller. He had a game-high 24 points on 5-of-8 shooting from three-point range. He also had three assists and two rebounds.
Sheets bounced back from a rough outing at Milwaukee on Thursday, finishing with 13 points and a pair of rebounds. Avery was 3-for-4 from downtown. Joel Cornette had 10 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Duane Lightfoot, Jr. added six points and two rebounds off the bench. Mike Monserez hauled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with five points and three assists. Lewis Curry and Darnell Archey added five points each. UWGB was led by Terry Parker's 13 points off the bench.
There were lots of positives to come out of this game. After turning the ball over a season-high 24 times at Milwaukee Thursday, it was good to see the Bulldogs with just three turnovers today. Butler has struggled of late against opposing centers, but held Greg Babcock to just six points and four shot attempts. Their defense overall was markedly better than it has been, holding the Phoenix to just 53 points and 38% shooting. And coming off a tough loss at Milwaukee, the Bulldogs were able to overcome a sluggish first half and earn a win at Green Bay, something UWM was unable to do a week ago.
Up next for the Bulldogs is the game most Butler fans have been anticipating the most all season. The Dawgs travel to North Carolina to play a non-conference game against the mighty Duke Blue Devils. Game time is Thursday, January 30, at 7:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
