Butler began the second half on an 18-4 run to take a 16-point lead at 57-41 with 14:06 to go, but once again the Panthers clawed their way back into the game. A pair of Ronnie Jones free throws gave the Panthers a 65-64 lead at the 4:31 mark. Butler pushed their lead back out to four points on two ocassions, the latter on a Joel Cornette layup with 2:49 left. A conventional three-point play by Clay Tucker made it 71-70, and Cornette answered with another layup at the 2:07 mark. Justin Lettenberger's layup with 1:30 to go cut it back to one at 73-72. Neither team managed to score until Lettenberger drew Cornette's fifth foul with 4.2 seconds remaining. With a raucous crowd making as much noise as it could, Lettenberger calmly sank both free throws. After a UWM timeout to set their defense, the Bulldogs had one final chance. With the Panthers defending Brandon Miller heavily, Mike Monserez inbounded the ball to Sheets. Avery drove to the left wing and shot a running three-pointer with the clock winding down, and it found nothing but the bottom of the net. Pandemonium ensued, and the Bulldogs came away with a huge win, 76-74.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Sheets. This is a no-brainer. It still says "Freshman" next to his name on the roster, but he has hit enough clutch three-pointers over the past week that it's easy to forget that fact. He had six points, two assists, two rebounds, and two steals. And when people look back and reminisce on memorable moments they witnessed at Hinkle Fieldhouse, his game-winner will no doubt be near the top of plenty of lists.
Darnell Archey buried five three-pointers for 15 points. Fellow senior Cornette had 13 points and seven rebounds. Duane Lightfoot, Jr. added 12 points and three rebounds before fouling out. Miller and Monserez each finished with 10 points and four assists. Mike Moore had four points and a big block in six quality minutes. Lewis Curry and Bruce Horan each connected from downtown for three points. UWM was led by Jones' 19 points.
What an incredible game! Not just because of what was on the line, but also the crowd, the atmosphere, and the amazing finish. This game definitely erases the sting of Tucker's buzzer-beater at Hinkle last year. It definitely lived up to its billing, and then some.
As the top seed in the Horizon League tournament, Butler has earned a bye to the semi-finals. The Bulldogs won't know who their opponent for that game will be until the quarterfinal games are finished next Friday, but they do know that the game will take place at the US Cellular Arena in Milwaukee at 6:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, March 8. Check back for updates as the HL Tournament unfolds.
