The Raiders went on a 6-0 run to start the second half, but Mike Monserez and Avery Sheets each hit a pair of three-pointers to help push the Butler advantage back out to 18 at 57-39. The lead hovered between 16 and 18 points from 13:58 to 8:15, then the Raiders began to make one final push. A 12-4 WSU run over the next 6:08 made it 69-61, but Brandon Miller hit back-to-back three-pointers from NBA range sandwiched around a Seth Doliboa jumper to make it 75-63. Miller and Monserez each hit a pair of free throws in the final minute to clinch a 79-64 victory.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Miller. Brandon's two late bombs killed any momentum the Raiders were gaining down the stretch. Miller scored 14 of Butler's final 18 points, and finished with 22 for the game on 6-of-7 shooting, including a perfect 4-of-4 from downtown.
Cornette finished with 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Monserez added 11 points, three rebounds, and six assists with just one turnover in 33 minutes. Duane Lightfoot, Jr. had 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench, and Sheets added nine in a reserve role as well. Bruce Horan nailed a trey for three points. A pair of Bulldogs scored their first points of the season--Mike Moore had a basket for two points, and redshirt freshman Andy Grunst nailed a three-pointer for his first points as a Bulldog. Lewis Curry and Darnell Archey finished with two points apiece. Wright State was led by Vernard Hollins' 23 points and Doliboa's double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds.
After playing so well in the first half, the second half seemed much worse than it actually was. The Raiders spent the bulk of the second half down by 15 or more points, and could get no closer than eight, and even that only lasted 30 seconds before Miller drilled the first deep three-pointer. Eight Bulldogs saw 10 or more minutes, and 10 scored, which should bode well for the Bulldogs as they hit the road portion of the "3 games in 5 days" stretch in the schedule. The biggest difference in the game was three-point shooting: Butler was 11-20 (55%) for the game, while the Raiders managed just 3-17 (18%).
The Bulldogs make their final road trip of the regular season. The two-game swing into Ohio starts with a trip to Youngstown State. Game time is Saturday, February 22, at 7:00 p.m. EST.
