DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Butler's Joel Cornette and Duane Lightfoot, Jr. combined for 42 points to lead the Bulldogs past Youngstown State, 69-60. Butler shot a blistering 65% from the floor in the first half, led by Cornette's 18 points, to take a 37-30 halftime lead. The Penguins made the first basket of the second half to get within five, but the Bulldogs eventually pushed the lead out to 11 when Lightfoot scored off a YSU turnover with just over 14 minutes to go. The lead stayed between seven and 12 points for the Bulldogs for the next 11 minutes. It was 63-51 Butler with around 3:00 remaining when the Penguins went on a 5-0 run to make it 63-56. Cornette converted a layup and was fouled, but missed the free throw. An Andy Jahnke three-pointer cut the lead to 65-59 with 1:19 left. Butler ran some clock and Brandon Miller missed a three-pointer, but YSU's Marlon Williamson traveled with 31.2 seconds remaining. After a Butler timeout, the Bulldogs were able to inbound the ball to Darnell Archey, much to the chagrin of YSU coach John Robic who clearly wanted one of the best free throw shooters in the country to be denied the ball. DA was fouled and sank both free throws to make it 67-59. After TeJay Anderson missed at the other end, Mike Monserez was fouled and made both of his free throws to give the Bulldogs a ten point lead at 69-59. YSU's Adam Baumann was fouled after Williamson missed a three-pointer, and converted one of two free throws to make the final score 69-60.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Cornette. JC continued his torrid play of late, finishing with a career-high 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting. He also added four assists, three rebounds, and three blocks.

Lightfoot finished with 18 points on 9-of-10 shooting along with four rebounds. Archey had 10 points and three assists, and earned praise from head coach Todd Lickliter for his defensive effort. Monserez had seven points, six rebounds, and five assists, and Miller added seven points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Mike Moore converted a conventional three-point play to finish with three points. YSU was led by Baumann's 14 points and seven rebounds.

With YSU making a concerted effort to take away Butler's perimeter attack, the inside was ripe for the picking, and Cornette and Lightfoot took full advantage of it. They combined to shoot 19-of-25 (76%) from the field. And while Baumann's 14 points were above his season average, they were much less damaging than the 25 he scored at Hinkle last month. Cornette did a great job defensively on him. The 58.7% shooting by the Bulldogs was their best effort of the season. And after getting hammered on the boards 29-16 by the Penguins in their first meeting, Butler eked out a 26-25 advantage on the boards tonight.

The Bulldogs play their final road game of the regular season, and their third game in five days, when they travel to Cleveland State to face the Vikings. Game time is Monday, February 24, at 7:00 p.m. EST.
