The Bulldogs pushed their lead out to double figures for the bulk of the opening 10 minutes of the second half. A Mike Monserez three-pointer made the Bulldog lead 13 at 50-37 with 9:54 to go. But that's when the Penguins began to make their run. A 14-5 spurt made it 55-51 with 4:04 remaining. Butler's Darnell Archey was fouled in the act of shooting with 3:42 on the clock. This was significant for two reasons. One, it was Youngstown's second team foul of the half, a number that would come into play in the final seconds. Two, it unfortunately led to the end of Darnell's remarkable consecutive free throw streak. DA sunk the first one, but the second bounced short right, ending his Division-I record streak at 85 straight. Both Darnell and the crowd were initially disappointed, but both used the miss as a sort of spark. The crowd got to its feet and gave Darnell a much-deserved round of applause, and stayed up to encourage the Bulldogs on defense. Darnell dug in on defense and stuck to his man like glue. Youngstown failed to score, and Joel Cornette fed Duane Lightfoot, Jr. for a layup to make it 58-51 at the 2:39 mark. Marlon Williamson buried the first of three straight three-pointers, sandwiched around a Cornette dunk and a Monserez three-pointer off a Cornette assist, and it was suddenly a 63-60 Butler lead. YSU called timeout with 17 seconds remaining after the third long bomb from Williamson, and planned to foul Butler. The only problem was that they still only had two team fouls, and needed to get to seven before Butler would get to the free throw line. The Penguins committed five fouls over the next 12 seconds, eventually sending Monserez to the line for a one-and-one. Mike hit the front-end, making it a two-possession game and effectively sealing the outcome for Butler. He missed the second, but Youngstown missed one final three-point attempt and Butler escaped with a 64-60 win.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Archey. The streak is over, but it shouldn't overshadow a solid offensive game from Darnell. He was 5-of-7 from the field (4-of-6 from 3-point range) to finish with 15 points. I know he was disappointed with the missed free throw, but there's absolutely nothing to hang one's head over when you've made 109 of your last 111 free throw attempts. Congratulations to Darnell on an absolutely amazing accomplishment!
Monserez also nailed four three-pointers en route to 15 points. Brandon Miller finished with 10 points and four assists, and Lightfoot added 10 points off the bench. Cornette had a solid all-around game with seven points, a game-high 10 rebounds, five assists, a steal, and no turnovers in 33 minutes of play. Ben Grunst had a career-high five points, and Bruce Horan hit a pair of free throws for two points. YSU was led by Baumann's 25 points and nine rebounds.
If this game doesn't underscore the fact the Youngstown State has improved significantly over last year's squad, I'm not sure what will. Archey noted after the game that when the Bulldogs got up 10 or 15 points on them last year, he could sense them beginning to let up. This year, they never gave up, and instead did their best to knock out the heavily-favored Bulldogs on their home floor. "They weathered the best storm we could give them," said YSU coach John Robic. Part of that storm included 6-of-10 3-point shooting in the second half, and a 29-16 rebounding advantage for the game, including 12 on the offensive glass. Butler shot 53% for the game and 56% from 3-point range.
The Bulldogs hit the road for the next three games: two in Wisconsin, and one against the Duke Blue Devils. Up first is Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the preseason pick to win the HL. Game time is Thursday, January 23, at 8:00 p.m. EST.
