DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Ball State snapped a three-game losing streak against Butler with a 63-61 win in Muncie, marking the first time in 95 games that the Bulldogs have lost back-to-back contests. The first half was fairly even, with neither team leading by more than four points at any time. The Bulldogs led 29-25 at halftime. The second half started out much the same as the opening frame. Ball State briefly jumped on top 30-29 with 18:53 to go, but the Bulldogs reclaimed the lead and pushed it out to four points on four separate occasions, the last of which was a 44-40 lead at the 10:34 mark. That's when things went downhill for Butler. They would not score another field goal until an Avery Sheets layup with 2:12 to go, and over that 8+ minute span, the Cardinals took control of the game. Ball State went on a 12-1 run to make it 52-45 with 4:56 left. Neither team managed another point until Sheets' runner at 2:12. The Cardinals hit 11-of-16 free throws in the final two minutes, enough to hold off Butler's late-game charge, which included four 3-pointers in the final 1:20.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Sheets. Avery had 14 points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists in 36 minutes. And for the third time in four games, he did not commit a turnover. On the year, he has just three turnovers in 140 minutes.

Bruce Horan struggled from the field, but still finished with 14 points (including his first career 2-point basket) and five rebounds. Duane Lightfoot had 12 points and eight rebounds. He injured his ankle during the game, but was able to return, albeit with a noticeable limp. Freshman Brandon Crone had another solid effort off the bench, with seven points and three rebounds. Ditto for classmate Brian Ligon, who added five points and three rebounds. Mike Monserez had a tough night, finishing with four points on 1-of-9 shooting and committing six turnovers, but also pulled down seven rebounds, dished out five assists, and made three steals. Jamie Smalligan drained a 3-pointer with one second remaining to finish with three points, and fellow freshman Nick Brooks scored his first basket as a Bulldog on a driving layup for two points. Ball State was led by Dennis Trammell's 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting.

The shooting woes continued for the Bulldogs, as they failed to eclipse 40% from the field in either half and shot under 30% in each half from 3-point range. The talk heading into the game was about Ball State's new focus on team play, and they certainly showed it at both ends of the floor tonight. They defended well, especially on the perimeter, and were very disciplined and patient on offense. Two positives for Butler in my opinion were the play of the freshmen and the fact that they never gave up until the final horn. They were also successful at times in taking the ball off the dribble and scoring in the paint, but became content to settle for jump shots during the crucial run in the second half.

Hopefully a return to the friendly confines of Hinkle Fieldhouse will be just what the doctor ordered for the Bulldogs. The Evansville Aces face the Bulldogs on Saturday, December 6, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
