DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Mike Monserez' fade-away jumper with no time showing on the clock gave Butler a 57-56 win at Cleveland State and pulled the Bulldogs back to the .500 mark both overall and in Horizon League play. The game started quite slowly, as the score remained 2-2 from the 17:10 mark until a Duane Lightfoot layup at 14:41 made it 4-2. Butler led by three on two occasions, but CSU bounced back to lead by four at 13-9 with 10:35 left in the half. A Jeff James layup gave the Bulldogs a 23-19 advantage at the 4:12 mark, but CSU fought back to take a 27-26 lead with under a minute to go. Avery Sheets' basket put the Bulldogs back in the lead at halftime, 28-27. The second half was more of the same, as both teams battled back and forth with neither able to take control of the game. CSU used a 7-1 run to break a 38-all tie and take a 45-39 lead with 8:33 left, but Butler scored six unanswered points to tie things back up at 45-45. Following a Jermaine Robinson free throw, the Bulldogs scored seven straight points, capped by a Monserez three-pointer, to take a 52-46 lead with 3:18 to go. But CSU fought back again, using a 6-0 spurt to tie the score at 52 with 1:56 to play. Monserez hit another three-pointer at the 1:11 mark to make it 55-52, but Omari Westley's jumper at the other end pulled the Vikings within one at 55-54 with 50 seconds left. Monserez shot a quick three-pointer in an attempt to get Butler a 2-for-1 possession advantage in the final minute, but it was blocked by Luke Murphy and rebounded by Pape Badiane. Following a CSU timeout, Robinson drove and scored on a layup with 0:16 left to put the Vikings on top 56-55. Butler inbounded and drove to their end, eventually getting the ball to Monserez for what appeared to be a buzzer-beating fade-away jumper to give the Bulldogs the win. Only one problem: even though the clock showed zeroes, the buzzer had yet to sound, so CSU still had a chance for a miracle tip-in off the inbounds pass. But their desperation heave was tipped away and the buzzer finally sounded, giving Butler a hard-fought 57-56 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Monserez. Mike missed his first four three-point attempts, but hit two clutch three-pointers down the stretch in addition to the game-winning two pointer. He finished with 16 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. He also spent a bit of time running the point for the Bulldogs, as Sheets missed the bulk of the second half with what was diagnosed as a mild concussion. Another great all-around game from Mike, and another game-winning shot.

Lighfoot led the Bulldogs with 17 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and a blocked shot. Bruce Horan hit four three-pointers for 12 points. Sheets had four points in 16 minutes before leaving the game. James added four points and five rebounds. Jamie Smalligan had two points and five rebounds, and Nick Gardner added two points and two rebounds. Cleveland State was led by Omari Westley's game-high double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds.

A bizarre ending, but the Bulldogs found a way to win. Coach Todd Lickliter said afterwards that he saw the red light go off, which should have ended the game, but the referees didn't see the light and knew the buzzer had yet to sound, so they allowed CSU one more chance. With no television replay available, that was about all they could do. The amount of time between the light going off and the buzzer sounding is so unbelievably small that I would have to guess it's pretty close to impossible to stop the clock between those two events, but somehow it happened.

Butler's three-point shooting wasn't as strong as it has been of late (26% for the game), but the Bulldogs outrebounded CSU 34-32 and forced 17 turnovers. After coughing the ball up nine times in the first half, Butler committed just two turnovers after halftime. Another positive turnaround in the second half was at the foul line: after failing to attempt a free throw in the opening frame, Butler did a better job of attacking the basket and shot 11 second-half free throws. The Vikings got to the line 20 times for the game, but connected on just seven of those attempts. A couple more of those free throws go in, and I'm probably typing about a different outcome. But congratulations to the Bulldogs on perservering and getting the 'W'.

Butler's three-game HL road trip ends with a trip to Calihan Hall to face the Detroit Titans. Game time is Saturday, February 14, at noon EST. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
