DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs handed the Cleveland State Vikings their 14th straight loss with a 61-43 decision at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Both teams shot 33% in the first half, and both squads were under 20% from three-point range in the opening frame. The game was tied at 7-7 when an 11-2 Butler run gave the Bulldogs an 18-9 lead with 6:56 left in the half, a lead they would not relinquish. CSU responded with an 8-2 run to close to within three at 20-17, but the Bulldogs closed the half on a 6-0 run to take a 26-17 lead at halftime. Both offenses heated up in the second half, but the Bulldogs opened with a 13-4 run to lead 39-21 with 13:58 remaining. CSU closed to within 13 at 46-33 with 8:55 to go, but would get no closer. Butler led by as many as 21 down the stretch at 59-38, and cruised to a 61-43 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Avery Sheets. Avery scored all 13 of his points in the first half, and played solid defense on CSU's Jermaine Robinson. He said after the game that drawing the assignment of guarding Robinson (who ranks in the top 25 nationally in scoring) helped to get him "fired up" on both ends of the floor. His energetic play was one of the few bright spots in the first half. Subtracting out his 4-of-6 effort and Duane Lightfoot's 3-of-5 shooting, the rest of the team combined for 3-of-19 shooting and seven points in the opening 20 minutes. Avery also added three steals.

Lightfoot finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Bruce Horan connected on three of his six three-point attempts for nine points along with three rebounds. Jamie Smalligan added eight points and two rebounds. Nick Brooks finished with seven points and two rebounds off the bench. Mike Monserez continued his shooting struggles, finishing 2-of-11 from the floor (0-of-5 from three-point range) for six points, but added team-highs of nine rebounds and six assists. Brian Ligon, starting in place of Jeff James, had four points. Butler coach Todd Lickliter stated that Jeff did not play due to a "coach's decision", declining to elaborate on the reason, but stated that Jeff "will be back." Brandon Crone scored his first points since returning from knee surgery, connecting on his only shot attempt for two points. CSU was led by Robinson's 16 points and Omari Westley's 16 points and nine rebounds.

It wasn't the prettiest game to watch, but the Bulldogs took care of business. They shook off a cold first half to shoot 55% in the second half, including 44% from three-point range. They outrebounded CSU 31-17, including 14 offensive rebounds. Butler also got back to the free throw line, following a three free-throw game last Saturday with a 13-of-15 performance tonight. The ball movement continues to improve, as the Bulldogs had 14 assists on 21 baskets. CSU played a zone defense for a good portion of the game, and Butler did a good job of getting the ball in the middle of the zone and kicking it back out for open looks from the perimeter.

The Bulldogs will face the preseason Horizon League favorites when the Illinois-Chicago Flames come to Hinkle Fieldhouse. Game time is Saturday, January 31, at 2:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised on FoxSports Midwest, FoxSports Chicago, and FoxSports North. Hope to see you there.
