PLAYER OF THE GAME: Horan. Bruce finished with a team-high 15 points (all on three-pointers) to go along with four rebounds and two assists. He struggled in the second half, connecting on just 1-of-7 attempts, but his shooting in the opening frame really helped get the Bulldogs out of the gates quickly.
Sheets added 11 points and three assists. Duane Lightfoot finished with 10 points, a game-high eight rebounds, and two steals. Monserez had eight points and four assists. Jamie Smalligan had two points and six rebounds, and Brandon Crone added two points and four rebounds off the bench. Detroit was led by Covile's 19 points (a new career-high) and six rebounds.
Two keys in this game made the difference. Butler's offense struggled to put points on the board in the second half, and Detroit's inside game was simply too much for the Bulldogs. I think having Brian Ligon available to play in this game would have been a big boost for Butler's interior defense. Offensively, after moving the ball well and get several open looks early, the offense seemed to stall in the second half. The cuts weren't as crisp, there was a lot more standing, and the Bulldogs were often forced to put up a tough shot late in the shot clock. A good deal of credit should be given to Detroit's defense, as they really tightened things up in the second half. But you have to wonder if fatigue played a role, as four Butler starters played 36 or more minutes, and BU scored just one field goal over the final four minutes. The Bulldogs once again outrebounded Detroit, 30-26, but the Titans outscored Butler in the paint 26-16. With Butler taking well over half its shots from the perimeter, they only got to the foul line six times (making five). Detroit, shooting just 67% from the free throw line entering the game, was 12-of-14 at the charity stripe (86%).
Butler returns home for three straight games. First up are the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers. Game time is WEDNESDAY, February 18, at 7:00 p.m. EST. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS GAME WAS MOVED FROM THURSDAY NIGHT TO WEDNESDAY NIGHT. Hope to see you there.
