DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix swept the season series with the Butler Bulldogs with a 60-50 win at the Resch Center in Green Bay. The loss was Butler's fifth straight to move into a tie for last in the Horizon League, while UWGB won its ninth straight to remain atop the HL standings. Things started well for Butler. The Bulldogs opened the game with a 10-2 run, and led 16-8 after starting the game 6-of-8 from the field. It was 24-18 after a pair of Jeff James free throws with 3:24 left in the first half, but the Phoenix scored the final six points of the opening frame to head into halftime with a 24-24 tie. UWGB then scored the first six points of the second half, accounting for a 12-0 run in total to take a 30-24 lead. A Bruce Horan three-pointer ended an 8:39 scoring drought spanning both halves for Butler at 30-27 with 14:45 remaining. The teams exchanged a pair of baskets apiece to make it 34-31, then UWGB went on an 11-0 run to put the game out of reach, 45-31. Butler would cut the lead to five at 50-45 following a conventional three-point play from James with 2:50 left, but the Phoenix made 10-of-12 free throws down the stretch to seal a 60-50 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: James. Jeff had a double-double with 12 points and career-high 10 rebounds. He continues to shine at the free throw line, where he was 8-for-10.

Mike Monserez finished with 14 points and nine rebounds for the second consecutive game. Duane Lightfoot, who attended his uncle's funeral in North Carolina the day before, came off the bench for eight points and six rebounds. (My heartfelt condolences are extended to Duane and his family for such a tragic loss of life.) Avery Sheets, coming off the bench for the first time all season, added eight points. Horan finished with six points, and Jamie Smalligan added two points and three rebounds. UWGB was led by Matt Rohde's game-high 16 points.

After seemingly making progress in Thursday's loss at Milwaukee, Butler seems to have taken another step back. Although the 39% shooting was better than it has been lately for the Bulldogs, having just three assists on 16 baskets shows the offensive woes are far from over. Butler entered the game second in the nation in fewest turnovers per game at just over 10 a contest, but coughed up the ball a season-high 20 times. Particularly disheartening is the fact that 18 of the 20 miscues were committed by returning letterwinners. The Bulldogs handily won the battle of the boards 34-18, including 13 offensive rebounds, but it wasn't enough to overcome their turnovers.

After playing nine of their first 13 games away from Hinkle Fieldhouse, the Bulldogs return home for six of their next seven. Up first are the Loyola Ramblers. Game time is Thursday, January 15, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
