PLAYER OF THE GAME: Sheets. Avery followed his 21-point, 5-rebound performance on 8-of-10 shooting in the first round with a 23-point, 8-of-9 effort tonight. He finished 4-for-5 from three-point range, but his drives to the basket were just as effective as his perimeter attack. He committed just two turnovers in 35 minutes, and held UWGB's Matt Rohde to just seven points. The Phoenix was 13-1 in games where Rohde scored 10 or more points heading into the contest.
Monserez finished with 18 points and six rebounds. Bruce Horan added 11 points and three rebounds. Duane Lightfoot had eight points, five rebounds, and two blocked shots. Nick Brooks continued to shine in the tournament, finishing with five points and career-highs of seven assists, six rebounds, two blocks, and 30 minutes. Ryan Reynolds added four points, and Brandon Crone finished with three. UWGB was led by Mike King's 12 points.
Much like Tuesday's game, the stats speak volumes. Butler shot 54% overall, 52% from three-point range, held their opponent to 35% and 25%, respectively, and dished out 14 assists on 22 field goals. It's great to see them shooting so well, but it's just as encouraging to know that with the defense they've been playing, they haven't needed to shoot the lights out to win. If they continue to defend well, they'll be able to weather a cold-shooting night and still come out on top.
After defeating one team that swept them during the regular season, the Bulldogs get a chance to face another. Butler faces the #2 seed Illinois-Chicago Flames in Horizon League semi-final action. Game time is Saturday, March 6, at approximately 8:00 p.m. EST (30 minutes following the conclusion of the UW-Milwaukee/Detroit game). The game will be televised live on FoxSports Chicago, and rebroadcast at 1:30 a.m. on FoxSports North, at 3:00 a.m. on FoxSports Midwest, and at 4:00 a.m. on FoxSports Detroit.
