DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Martell Bailey's career-high 22 points led the Illinois-Chicago Flames past the Butler Bulldogs 64-54 in the regular season finale for both squads. Butler started the game on a 10-4 run, as UIC's five departing seniors got the start on Senior Night at the UIC Pavilion. The Flames subbed in several regulars, and following a long delay to get the clocks over the baskets working again, UIC outscored the Bulldogs 24-10 the rest of the half to take a 28-20 halftime lead. Bailey keyed UIC's run, putting the Flames in the lead for good with back-to-back three-pointers to break an 11-11 tie. Cedrick Banks buried consecutive three-pointers to start the second half, giving UIC its biggest lead of the game at 34-20. But the Bulldogs fought their way back throughout the second half, closing to within three at 51-48 on a pair of Mike Monserez free throws with 3:45 left. But Bailey scored and was fouled at the other end. Elliott Poole rebounded Bailey's missed free throw and was fouled, and his two free throws made it 54-48 with 3:24 left. A Monserez three-pointer with under three minutes remaining cut the deficit to four points at 57-53, but the Bulldogs would get no closer. The Flames hit their last seven free throws down the stretch to ice the game and sweep the regular season series with Butler, 64-54.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Avery Sheets. Avery scored Butler's first five points, and finished with a team-high 13 points along with three rebounds and two steals.

Duane Lightfoot had 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Monserez added 10 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Bruce Horan hit three three-pointers for nine points. Jamie Smalligan added five points and three rebounds. Nick Gardner and Nick Brooks each finished with two points and two rebounds, and Jeff James had one point and four rebounds. UIC was led by Bailey's aforementioned 22 points.

This game was quite similar to the first meeting between these two teams at Hinkle last month. It was very physical, with plenty of activity under the basket and in dead ball situations. UIC outshot Butler 27-8 at the free throw line in Indianapolis, and held a 34-17 advantage tonight. The Bulldogs did outrebound the Flames 35-33. But the difference in the game was Bailey. Despite being only 5'10", he got most of his points in the paint, continually driving the right side of the lane for layups. UIC's big men were effective in sealing off their defenders, so that when Bailey beat his defender up top, there was no one in position to help out underneath.

The loss makes Butler the 6 seed in the Horizon League Tournament. Their opening round opponent will be the 7 seed Youngstown State Penguins, who lost to the Bulldogs at Hinkle last Wednesday, 81-76. Game time is Tuesday, March 2, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
