PLAYER OF THE GAME: Lightfoot. Duane returned to the starting lineup for the first time since January 3 at Wright State, and responded with game-highs of 22 points and nine rebounds. Head coach Todd Lickliter noted, "Duane was really active inside." He shot 11-of-16 from the field, continually picking apart IPFW's interior defense to receive a perfectly-timed pass from a teammate for an open layup. "I'm just moving without the ball, like I've always been taught," Lightfoot said. "We've got great passers that are just finding me."
Two other players finished in double figures for Butler. Bruce Horan was 4-of-8 from three-point range en route to 14 points. Avery Sheets added 11 points, five assists, and no turnovers. Nick Brooks nailed 3-of-4 attempts from long range for nine points. Mike Monserez added five points, eight assists, and five rebounds. Jamie Smalligan had five points and two steals. Brian Ligon and James Parker finished with three points apiece. IPFW was led by David Simon's 17 points and five rebounds.
"I think that might have been the best that we've passed the ball this year," commented Lickliter. "We've become more comfortable with one another." The Bulldogs dished out a season-high 21 assists on 26 baskets, with seven different players recording an assist. Butler shot 50% from both two-point and three-point range in the second half, and 47% overall (41% from three-point range) for the game. "One of the things that I like is we're shooting the ball better in the second half, which is exciting, because it means that we're continuing to gain strength," Lickliter said. "I'm pleased with that." Butler held IPFW to 40% shooting overall, including 27% from three-point range, and outrebounded the Mastodons 34-26. A nice win to close to homestand, and hopefully one that can build some momentum as the Bulldogs enter a three-game Horizon League road trip.
First up for Butler is a trip to Chicago to face the Loyola Ramblers. Game time is Saturday, February 7, at 2:00 p.m. EST.
