DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs snapped a two-game losing streak with a 57-39 victory over the Indiana State Sycamores at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs started the game with a 12-2 run that spanned the first 9:14 of the game. ISU answered with six unanswered points to make it 12-8, but a 10-2 Butler run pushed the Bulldog advantage out to 12 at 22-10 with 5:23 left in the half. The halftime lead was also 12 for the Bulldogs at 28-16. Butler shot 35% from the field in the opening frame, but held the Sycamores to just 25%. Double technical fouls were whistled on Butler's Mike Monserez and ISU's Ted Morris with Butler leading 31-20 at the 17:19 mark of the second half. That seemed to spark the Sycamores a bit, as ISU closed to within seven at 33-26. The Bulldogs then reeled off seven straight points to push the lead back to double figures, where it would remain for the rest of the game. Butler held ISU to just one field goal (a dunk with 0:06 left) over the final five-and-a-half minutes, and won easily 57-39.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mike Monserez. Mike broke out of his recent slump in a big way, and provided the type of numbers that Butler fans are more accustomed to seeing next to his name on the stat sheet. He finished with a double-double, putting up team-highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds. He was 6-of-11 from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, and nailed all five of his free throws.

Bruce Horan joined Monserez in double digits with 12 points on four three-point baskets. Jeff James, back in the starting lineup for the injured Duane Lightfoot, responded with a solid eight-point, six-rebound performance. Avery Sheets had eight points, four rebounds, and three assists in "only" 31 minutes. Nick Brooks came off the bench for four points and three rebounds. Andy Grunst provided a spark off the bench in the first half, draining a three-pointer in his first significant playing time of the season. Brian Ligon added two points and two rebounds. ISU was led by David Moss' game-high 23 points.

Butler's shooting percentage was still on the wrong side of 40% (36% for the game), but its defense and rebounding more than made up for it. The Bulldogs held ISU to 30% shooting for the game, had 13 points off turnovers (ISU managed just two), and outrebounded the Sycamores 39-30. The Bulldogs were particularly effective at keeping ISU off the offensive glass, yielding just six second chance points on five offensive rebounds. Another nice aspect of this game was the fact that no one for Butler played more than 34 minutes, and the four freshman combined to play 53 minutes. As they begin to get more comfortable in Butler's system, their continued development will pay big dividends down the road.

Horizon League play kicks off a bit earlier than usual for the Bulldogs when the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix comes to Hinkle Fieldhouse. Game time is Monday, December 22, at 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you there.
