DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs opened exhibition play with an 80-66 victory over the Knox Select Raiders of Australia. Both teams played almost evenly for the first half, with the Raiders taking a 34-33 lead into the locker room. The Bulldogs made three more field goals in the opening frame, but sent the Raiders to the line 11 times via 10 first half fouls. The game remained close to start the second half, but Butler went on a 25-5 run to make a 42-40 lead with 16:29 to go into a 67-45 advantage at the 8:15 mark. Knox would close to within 13 with 1:49 to go, but would get no closer.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mike Monserez. The senior leader did a little bit of everything with a game-high 24 points along with six rebounds in 18 minutes. He was perfect at the line (5-of-5) and from behind the arc (3-of-3) and displayed a fade-away shot that continually found the bottom of the net.

Honorable mention goes to James Parker. The junior college transfer continued to display the perimeter attack he showed at last Saturday's scrimmage, burying 5-of-8 attempts from downtown en route to 19 points. Butler's other double-digit scorer was Duane Lightfoot, Jr., who just missed a double-double with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. He also had game-highs with four assists, three blocks, and three steals. Freshman Brian Ligon showed a great touch in the paint with eight points and four rebounds. Avery Sheets added four points and three assists. Brandon Crone added four points and five rebounds, and showed that he still has a little football in him as he dove out of bounds into the Knox bench to save a loose ball, crashed hard into the chairs, and bounced right back up to take his place at the other end of the floor. Bruce Horan nailed a trey for three points along with two rebounds, and Jeff James, Jamie Smalligan, and Nick Brooks all finished with two points each. Smalligan also hauled down four rebounds. Knox was led by Chris Novak's 16 points. Former Butler standout Darnell Archey had a rough homecoming, finishing with seven points on 3-of-10 shooting, but did manage to nail a three-pointer that certainly brought back plenty of pleasant memories.

Things looked a little ragged at times, but you can't argue with the results. When the decisive run started in the second half, you could see everyone's intensity pick up a notch and they went for the kill. The Bulldogs won the battle of the boards, 38-31, and look like they will be a better rebounding squad than in years past. They were particularly aggressive on the offensive glass, pulling down 15 rebounds on that end of the floor. Everyone on the roster played except walk-on freshman Drew Streicher, who is rumored to be red-shirted this season, so it appears as though all the scholarship newcomers will be playing this season.

Butler's final exhibition game will be Wednesday, November 12, at 7:00 p.m. against Wayne State at Hinkle Fieldhouse. I will be unable to attend, and won't have internet access until the weekend, so updates will be posted as soon as I can get to them. Your patience is appreciated.
