DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs ended a two-game losing streak at the Joseph J. Gentile Center with a 74-67 overtime victory over the Loyola Ramblers and swept the season series. It was nip-and-tuck for the bulk of the first half, as the two squads battled to a 22-22 tie with 1:30 left in the period. But the Ramblers closed out the final 90 seconds on a 7-0 run to take a 29-22 halftime lead. The damage could have been much worse for Butler, but the Ramblers were only 9-of-16 at the foul line. Butler shot just 31% from the field in the opening frame, including just 2-of-10 from three-point range, and managed just 2-of-3 from the foul line. The Bulldogs also committed seven turnovers in the first 20 minutes. The second half started with a pair of three-pointers from Bruce Horan to quickly shave the Butler deficit to one at 29-28. The middle portion of the second half resembled its first half counterpart, as both teams battled back and forth with neither gaining a significant advantage. With just under 7:00 to play in regulation, Loyola led 48-46. The Bulldogs then went on a 13-2 run to seemingly take control of the game with a 59-50 lead with 2:59 to go. But someone forgot to tell the Ramblers that the game was out of reach, and a late flurry of three-pointers, including back-to-back triples from Paul McMillan, helped Loyola knot the score at 61 with under a minute remaining. Loyola eventually fouled Duane Lightfoot and put him at the line for a one-and-one. Lightfoot missed the front end, but Mike Monserez tipped the rebound back to Lightfoot, who was again fouled. Duane made the most of his second chance, knocking down both free throws to give the Bulldogs a 63-61 lead with nine seconds on the clock. Loyola's DaJuan Gouard drove for a game-tying layup, and the game went to overtime tied at 63. Butler reversed several first-half trends, shooting 59% overall, 62% from three-point range, and 7-of-9 from the foul line in the second 20 minutes. Both teams exchanged baskets to open the extra frame. A Demetrius Williams basket with under 3:00 left gave the Ramblers a 67-65 lead, but the Bulldogs closed the game on a 9-0 run to earn a 74-67 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Horan. After a 1-for-5 first half from behind the arc, Bruce finished the game 5-of-7 from downtown en route to a career high 22 points, 17 of which came after halftime. It seemed that every time Butler needed a big shot in the second half, Bruce delivered. His six three-pointers, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals all tied career-highs. He also added a first-half layup, his first career two-point basket in Horizon League play, for good measure.

Lighfoot finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Monserez put up yet another solid all-around effort, finishing with 10 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. Avery Sheets added eight points and a career-high six rebounds. Jeff James had eight points off the bench. Nick Brooks continued his recent hot shooting from three-point range with a pair of treys for six points. Jamie Smalligan added five points, and fellow freshman Brian Ligon added a free throw for one point along with a career-best six rebounds. Ligon left the game with an undisclosed left knee injury. Loyola was led by McMillan's 15 points.

Big win for the Bulldogs. The Gentile Center has been a house of horrors for Butler the past two seasons, as the Ramblers seemed to have BU's number in Chicago. But the Dawgs fought through a pair of Loyola runs to close each half, outrebounded the Ramblers 39-33, and dished out 15 assists on 25 field goals. As they continue to fight to keep the Horizon League tournament at Hinkle Fieldhouse, it was an important step forward to start their three-game HL road trip with a win.

The middle game of the road swing pits the Bulldogs against the Cleveland State Vikings. Game time is Thursday, February 12, at 7:00 p.m. EST.
