DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs broke a five-game losing streak and earned their first win in Horizon League play with a 72-54 victory over the Loyola Ramblers at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler jumped out of the gates quickly, scoring the game's first 13 points. Their lead swelled to as many as 17 at 24-7 when the Ramblers went on a 16-3 run to make it 27-23. Butler took a 36-31 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Dawgs took a 10-point lead at 47-37 with 13:41 remaining, but Loyola chipped it down to three on two occasions, the latter coming with 8:24 to go and Butler leading 49-46. But the Bulldogs closed the game with a 23-8 run and won going away, 72-54.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mike Monserez. Mike finished with a career-high 25 points along with nine rebounds and six assists. He was also an impressive 16-of-16 from the foul line, one short of the Butler single-game record of 17-for-17 set by Bobby Plump against Evansville on January 11, 1958.

Also finishing with a career high in points was Jamie Smalligan, who had 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting (3-of-5 from three-point range) and tied his career bests with four rebounds and a pair of steals. Duane Lightfoot came off the bench for 12 points and three assists. Bruce Horan hit three first-half three-pointers for nine points. Nick Brooks added six points off the bench. Jeff James had two points and four rebounds, and Brian Ligon added two points. Ryan Reynolds added a late free throw for one point. Avery Sheets was held scoreless, but dished out five assists and made two steals. Loyola was led by Paul McMillan's 21 points and five rebounds.

It was nice to see the Bulldogs jump out to an early lead, weather several runs by Loyola, and lead the game from start to finish. Butler finished with season-highs in points (72), free throws made (21), and assists (17), and their 46.8% field goal shooting was second only to their 46.9% effort to start the season against Quincy. The ball movement was so much better tonight than it has been, and the assists certainly speak volumes to that end. Loyola entered the game second in the league in both scoring (74.5 ppg) and rebounding (40.4 rpg), and Butler held the Ramblers 20 points under their average and outrebounded them 27-23. The 10 first-half turnovers were a little concerning, but they settled down in the second half and committed just three miscues. Progress was made, but the Dawgs know there's still room to improve. "In no way are we where we need to be, but I do think that to people that work hard and people that show constant improvement, good things happen," Monserez said after the game. "We just haven't put 40 minutes together yet." It may not have been a complete 40 tonight, but the number was certainly a lot higher than it's been in quite some time.

The Bulldogs look to put back-to-back wins together for the first time since the beginning of the season when the Detroit Titans come to town. Game time is Saturday, January 17, at noon EST. The game will be televised on FoxSports Midwest, FoxSports Detroit, and FoxSports Chicago. Hope to see you there.
