DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Two free throws by Daniel Horton with 6.9 seconds left in overtime gave Michigan a 61-60 win over Butler at Conseco Fieldhouse. Michigan's defense was the story of the first half, as the Wolverines' swarming attack held Butler to 29% shooting (21% from 3-point range) and forced 12 Bulldog turnovers. That led to a 32-23 Michigan lead at halftime. Butler closed to within one at 35-34 to start the second half, but for the next few minutes could never quite get over the hump. They were making stops defensively, but were unable to convert at the other end. Finally, a Duane Lightfoot layup knotted the score at 44 apiece. The Bulldogs eventually took their first lead of the game at 46-45 on a Brandon Crone layup. A pair of free throws from Mike Monserez made it 48-45, but UM responded with a 5-0 run to regain the lead, 50-48. A Monserez three-pointer and a Lightfoot free throw put the Bulldogs back on top 52-50, but Horton drew a foul and sank both free throws to knot things up at 52. Butler held the ball for a final shot in regulation, but Lightfoot's desperation 3-pointer bounced away and the game went to overtime. A pair of free throws by Chris Hunter gave UM a 54-52 lead. A Crone layup tied the game at 54, but Horton nailed a big 3-pointer to make it 57-54 Michigan. A free throw from Jeff James and a 3-pointer from Bruce Horan put Butler back on top 58-57. Lester Abram hit a pair of free throws for Michigan to make it 59-58. Lightfoot then found Crone cutting to the basket, and his layup gave the Bulldogs a 60-59 lead with 10 seconds remaining. Avery Sheets tried to draw a charge on Horton, but was called for a blocking foul. Horton made both free throws, and Crone's 3-pointer from the top of the key bounced away at the buzzer to give the Wolverines the victory.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Monserez and Lightfoot. Mike shook off some early shooting woes to finish with a game-high 23 points. He also played 43 of a possible 45 minutes and had a pair of steals. Lightfoot continues to fill the stat sheet, finishing with seven points, seven rebounds, and nine assists.

Horan finished with 11 points and two steals. Sheets added seven points and three assists. Crone added six points and three rebounds off the bench, and Jamie Smalligan had three points and four rebounds before fouling out. James finished with three points. Michigan was led by Horton's 16 points.

Again, a slow start forced the Bulldogs to play catch-up in the second half. But rather than give up and let the Wolverines run away with the game, the Bulldogs dug in on defense and clawed their way back into the game. I thought Sheets did a good job of handling constant pressure, and that our front line did a good job against a much bigger UM frontcourt. The young players logged some quality minutes against a tough opponent, something that should yield dividends down the stretch later this season. It was a heartbreaker for Butler fans, and I'm not one for moral victories, but I was impressed with the effort.

The Bulldogs next square off against in-state rival Ball State. Game time is Wednesday, December 3, at 7:00 p.m. EST in Muncie. Hope to see you there.
