DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs edged the Ohio Bobcats in overtime, 64-63, as part of ESPN's Bracket Buster Saturday. Both teams started slowly, but the Bulldogs found their range and posted a 21-6 lead. They matched that 15-point lead at 32-17 with 1:36 left in the half, but the Bobcats scored the final six points of the opening frame to cut the Butler lead to nine at 32-23 at the half. Butler's shooting woes continued into the second half, as Ohio pulled to within two at 32-30 with around 15:00 remaining, marking a 13-0 run spanning both halves. Butler finally ended its scoring drought and reeled off nine unanswered points to lead 41-30 at the 10:00 mark. The Bobcats responded with an 8-0 run of their own to make it 41-38. Following a pair of Bulldog free throws, Jeff Halbert connected on back-to-back three-pointers to give Ohio a 44-43 lead with 5:15 left. The teams battled back and forth, and the Bobcats eventually built a 54-49 lead with 24.4 seconds left. But Mike Monserez nailed a three-pointer with 0:15 left to make it 54-52. Ohio's Sonny Troutman threw the ensuing inbounds pass out of bounds, giving Butler a chance to tie. Avery Sheets had a good look at a baseline jumper, but it bounced away. But Monserez was there to tip in the rebound to tie the score at 54-54. Ohio's potential game-winning shot at the end of regulation was no good, and the game went to overtime.

Troutman scored the first points of the extra session on a pair of free throws, but Monserez responded with a basket at the other end to tie things back up at 56. A Bruce Horan three-pointer would give Butler the lead for good at 59-56 with 2:30 left. A Lightfoot layup made it 62-60, which was the score when Horan was fouled and sent to the line for a one-and-one. He connected on both attempts, which proved to be big for Butler, as Ohio's Terren Harbut nailed a three-pointer with 1.7 seconds left to make it 64-63. Butler inbounded the ball and was able to dribble out the clock, earning a hard-fought victory in overtime.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Lightfoot. With the perimeter attack struggling in the second half, Butler needed points in the paint in a big way, and D-Light delivered. He scored three big buckets late in the second half, showing the quick moves and soft touch that we've come to expect from him in the paint. He finished with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Horan also had 14 points along with two assists. Monserez added 10 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Sheets had 10 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and no turnovers in 38 minutes. Brandon Crone added six points off the bench. Nick Brooks had five points in a reserve role. Jamie Smalligan had three points and four rebounds. Jeff James added two points. Ohio was led by Jaivon Harris' 16 points off the bench.

The second half shooting was as cold as Butler's been lately, managing just 27% overall and 7% (1-14) from three-point range. But the Bulldogs found a way to win despite their shooting woes, which is something they were unable to do as a 4-9 team earlier this season. The win puts them over the .500 mark for the first time since they had a 3-2 record in early December. They committed just five turnovers while forcing 14, and dished out 15 assists on 24 baskets.

The Bulldogs enter the final week of the regular season with a pair of Horizon League games remaining. Up first is the regular season home finale against the Youngstown State Penguins. The senior night contest will take place Wednesday, February 25, at 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you there.
