DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs' road woes continued as they lost to the Saint Louis Billikens, 72-54. Butler came out shooting well, connecting on six of their first nine three-point attempts. The score was knotted at 27 when SLU scored 10 unanswered points to break the game open. Avery Sheets' late basket made it 37-29 at halftime. Unfortunately for Butler, its offense stayed in the locker room to start the second half, as the Bulldogs missed their first 15 shots to open the frame and fell behind 51-32, managing only three Sheets free throws during that span. Butler pulled to within 12 on a few occasions, the last coming at 56-44 with around seven-and-a-half minutes remaining, but would get no closer. An 11-2 SLU run made it 67-46 and ended any hopes of a miracle Butler comeback. The Billikens cruised from there, 72-54.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Sheets. Avery led all scorers with 25 points. He was 4-of-7 from three-point range, and added three assists, two steals, and two rebounds with no turnovers in 33 minutes.

Bruce Horan was Butler's only other double figure scorer, finishing with 10 points and three rebounds. Nick Brooks added eight points off the bench. Jamie Smalligan had three points in his first collegiate start, while Mike Monserez added three points and four assists. Jeff James had two points and four rebounds in a reserve role. Andy Grunst added two points, and Nick Gardner had one point and three rebounds. Duane Lightfoot, who missed the past two games with an ankle injury, played eight scoreless minutes off the bench but pulled down three rebounds. SLU was led by Reggie Bryant and Tom Frericks who scored 18 points each. Bryant added 12 rebounds.

Sheets and Brooks were a combined 11-of-19 from the floor; the rest of the team was 6-for-34. Butler was outshot (54% to 32%, including 44% to 33% from three-point range) and outrebounded (41-22). The stats pretty much speak for themselves. The Bulldogs need to find some consistency on offense, and tighten up on defense.

The road doesn't get any easier for Butler, as three straight Horizon League road games await them. First up are the Wright State Raiders. Game time is Saturday, January 3, at 7:00 p.m. EST.
