DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs trimmed a 16-point second half deficit down to five with under a minute remaining but could get no closer as the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers won 71-59. The game was tied 2-2 early and again at 18-18 with 8:14 left in the first half. No points were scored by either team until the Panthers' Adrian Tigert made a layup at the 2:02 mark to make it 20-18. Overall the Panthers ended the half on a 7-2 run, punctuated by a Tigert three-pointer at the horn, to take a 25-20 lead at halftime. It was 29-26 when UWM went on a 14-4 run to make it 43-30 with 14:09 left. The Panthers pushed their lead to as many as 16 on three different occasions, the last coming at 54-38 with 8:37 to go. The Bulldogs then began chipping away at the UWM lead. A steal and layup by Kalombo Kadima gave the Panthers a 62-49 advantage with 3:34 left, but a 10-2 Butler run, capped by a Nick Brooks three-pointer at the 0:54 mark, made it 64-59. The Bulldogs would not score again, however, as the Panthers made 7-of-8 free throws over the final minute to put the game away, 71-59.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Duane Lightfoot. Duane had his best game since returning from his ankle injury, reprising his role from last season as sixth man to come off the bench and lead the Bulldogs with 16 points and four blocks. He was 6-of-12 from the field, pulled down three rebounds, and dished out two assists. He's still not 100%, but the energy and spark he provided are much more like the Duane of old.

Mike Monserez finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, and three steals. Jeff James provided a big lift off the bench with 13 points and three rebounds, and was 7-of-9 at the foul line. Brooks, in his first collegiate start, finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Bruce Horan and James Parker each hit a three-pointer to finish with three points each. UWM was led by Dylan Page's 23 points.

The result was still a loss, but I feel like the Bulldogs turned a corner. The shooting woes continued, as the Bulldogs managed just 33% overall and 28% from three-point range, but they did shoot 48% in the second half. They also made it a point to get the foul line, where they were 18-of-24 after shooting just five free throws at Wright State last Saturday. I think the biggest difference, and hopefully the one that means that worst is behind them, was the effort and tenacity they displayed. They easily could have let this game get out of hand when they were down 16, but showed a lot of heart by digging in and refusing to go down without a fight. The end result was unfortunately the same as it's been the previous three contests, but there now seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel.

The four-game road swing comes to an end Saturday when the Bulldogs travel to Green Bay to face the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix. UWGB defeated the Butler at Hinkle last month 70-63, so the Bulldogs will be looking to return the favor and end a four-game losing streak against the team that started it. Game time is Saturday, January 10, at 8:00 p.m. EST.

John J. Ward in Milwaukee:
From my spot on the floor, across from the Butler bench, I was very
impressed with the intensity of the game.

It will still be many years before we get over our awe of Butler Basketball's
history, and the expectations that your fans have of your team and your coach.

I believe that Butler's coaching staff will figure out what they need to succeed
and will put a plan in motion.

At one media time-out during the game, our sports editor called out to show me
that NO ONE had scored since the previous media time-out... That shows two
forces, in the trenches, unable to advance.

In spite of all the silly chanting from the student section, serious basketball
fans were very pleased to see Avery, Mike Monserez, and even Joel (lookin'
pretty powerful in his suit), back in the Cold White North. The Roman Army has
arrived. Let the battle begin.

I am downloading my photos of the game for some lengthly study and I am sure to
catch hell for taking so many of the Bulldogs during the contest. I will
certainly post the best of the best to the buhoops board.

We will look forward to our return trip to Hinkle, if only to see if you can
work the magic again.

Best wishes for the continuing season,

John J Ward
