PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mike Monserez. Mike was the only Bulldog to reach double figures tonight, finishing with 17 points, five assists, four rebounds, and two steals. He was also 7-of-7 at the foul line.
Jeff James had another solid performance, finishing with nine points, six rebounds, and three blocks. Bruce Horan had three first half three-pointers for nine points. Avery Sheets added eight points. Jamie Smalligan broke out of his shooting slump to finish with seven points and two rebounds. Andy Grunst added five points and two rebounds. Nick Brooks had four points and four rebounds, and Nick Gardner added four points and three boards. UWGB was led by King's 15 points off the bench.
The Indiana State game felt like a step forward, and this certainly feels like just as big of a step backward. Butler's offense actually had its best shooting performance in quite some time (45%), although with only seven assists on 22 baskets, there is still plenty of room for improvement (Green Bay had 14 assists on their 22 made field goals.) UWGB's second half shooting performance was phenomenal, as the Phoenix missed just one two-point basket in eight attempts to go along with 6-of-9 from long range. Butler's help defense that was so solid against ISU Saturday seemed to vanish tonight, and the Phoenix players knocked down their open looks. With a four-game road trip looming after Christmas, the Bulldogs need to get the ship righted in a hurry to avoid digging a big hole to start Horizon League play.
The Bulldogs take a quick break from HL opposition before hitting the road for three straight conference games. Butler travels to Saint Louis to face the Billikens. Game time is Saturday, December 27, at 8:00 p.m. EST.
