DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs played one of their best games of the season, defeating the league-leading Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers 75-58 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs scored the game's first eight points, and led 11-3 with 14:44 left in the half. An 8-1 UWM run pulled the Panthers within one at 12-11, but the Bulldogs reeled off another 8-0 run to take a 20-11 lead. Butler led by as many as 12 at 27-15, and took a 30-21 lead to the lockerroom at halftime. The Bulldogs held the Panthers to 26% shooting in the first half, including 22% from three-point range, while shooting 41% and 43%, respectively, themselves. UWM used an 18-9 run at the start of the second half to tie the game at 39-39 with 14:26 left. But three straight three-pointers, including two from Mike Monserez, quickly put the Bulldogs back in control. The Panthers got to within five at 56-51 with 6:48 remaining, but could get no closer. Butler tooks its largest lead of the game on a pair of Monserez free throws at 75-56 with two seconds left. A Chris Hill jumper as time expired set the final margin, 75-58.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Avery Sheets. Avery did a little bit of everything tonight. He had a somewhat quiet first half, hitting a pair of three-pointers for six points. But he scored 17 of his game-high 23 points after halftime, using a combination of perimeter scoring and dribble-drives to the basket. He dished out five assists, and committed just two turnovers in 38 minutes. "Sheets was the difference [tonight]," UWM head coach Bruce Pearl noted. "We just couldn't guard him." Avery also drew the tough defensive assignment of UWM's Ed McCants. One of the leading candidates for Horizon League Newcomer of the Year, McCants had a hard-earned 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting.

Monserez was 4-for-5 from three-point range and finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Jamie Smalligan had the best game of his young career, putting up 12 points and six rebounds in the first half en route to career-highs of 15 points and eight rebounds for the game. Duane Lightfoot and Bruce Horan finished with seven points each. Nick Brooks had five points and four rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench. Jeff James added two points and two rebounds. UWM was led by Dylan Page's 18 points.

This game was very similar to the UIC game at Hinkle last month: very physical, emotions running high on both sides, some extra-curricular activity during breaks in play. The difference tonight in my opinion was that the Bulldogs refused to let themselves get pushed around, stood their ground, and took control of the game, never allowing the Panthers to take the lead. Of course, this led to a pair of technical fouls against Butler as well, but I thought they responded to the challenges they were presented with much better tonight than they did against the Flames. Butler shot 46% for the game, including a season-high 52% from long range. The Bulldogs were an impressive 9-of-15 from behind the arc in the second half (60%). While Butler is far from invincible at home, this game certainly showed how important keeping the Horizon League Tournament at Hinkle Fieldhouse will be. A Youngstown State loss tomorrow night at Wright State guarantees that the Bulldogs will play at Hinkle for as long they are still alive in the tournament; otherwise, next Wednesday's senior night game against YSU at Hinkle could be the clincher for home court advantage.

First, however, Butler steps away from league play to face the Ohio Bobcats as part of ESPN's Bracket Buster Saturday. Game time is Saturday, February 21, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
