PLAYER OF THE GAME: Nick Brooks. The freshman had his best game as a Bulldog to date, finishing with career-highs of 10 points and six rebounds.
Ligon also played well, putting up the best numbers of his young Butler career with eight points and five rebounds. Mike Monserez finished with seven points and seven rebounds, while James Parker provided a defensive spark off the bench with four steals to go along with seven points. Duane Lightfoot returned to the starting lineup for the first time since the Indiana game and finished with three points. Avery Sheets and Jeff James added two points each. Wright State was led by Seth Doliboa's double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Butler's offense is just a mess right now. Managing just 33% shooting on 16 field goals is a telling stat, but even more so is the fact that just three of those 16 baskets were assisted. There are periods where the ball moves well, but then it seems that the offense stalls and we panic and try to force something one-on-one instead of finding an open teammate. And when we do get an open look, more often than not it seems to hit everything but the bottom of the net. I still think we're a better shooting team than we've displayed thus far, but as Butler radio play-by-play voice Chris Denari mentioned in the postgame show, after 11 games you have to wonder how much of an aberration our continued cold shooting is. Butler's half-court defense was better, but the Raiders were very effective in beating the Bulldogs in transition and getting some easy baskets at their end off missed Butler shots. The Raiders also crashed the boards hard, easily winning the rebounding battle 44-26, including 13 offensive rebounds which led to 12 second chance points.
Butler closes out a stretch of four straight road games and nine of their first 13 games away from Hinkle Fieldhouse with two games against the Wisconsin contingent of the Horizon League. First up are the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers, who host the Bulldogs at US Cellular Arena on Thursday, January 8, at 8:30 p.m. EST. The Milwaukee telecast of the game will be available in Indianapolis on Comcast Cable channel 72.
