DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs survived a flurry of late three-pointers by the Youngstown State Penguins and held on for an 81-76 victory on senior night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler jumped out to a 7-2 lead early, but YSU fought back to take a 13-12 lead at the 12:23 mark. A 9-0 Bulldog run made it 21-13, and Butler's lead fluctuated between four and eight points for the remainder of the half, with the Dawgs taking a 36-30 halftime lead. Both teams shot the ball well in the opening frame, with YSU connecting on 55% of their attempts while the Bulldogs shot 57%, including 5-of-7 (71%) from three-point range. A pair of Mike Monserez layups to start the second half pushed Butler's lead to 10 at 40-30, but eight straight YSU points cut the lead to two at 40-38 with 16:29 left. A 15-5 Butler run made it 55-43 at the 9:46 mark, and the Bulldogs kept their lead between seven and 12 points for the next seven minutes. It was 71-62 Bulldogs at the 2:00 mark when an Adam Baumann free throw and a Doug Underwood three-pointer cut Butler's lead to five at 71-66. Duane Lightfoot hit a pair of free throws, but Underwood connected on another three-pointer to make it 73-69 with 26 seconds left. Following a YSU timeout, Monserez lobbed his inbounds pass to a wide-open Duane Lightfoot, whose breakaway dunk made it 75-69 with 22 second remaining. Bruce Horan was whistled for a foul, and Jonathan Mends' free throws once again made it a four-point game at 75-71. A pair of Lightfoot free throws with 14 second left pushed the lead back to six at 77-71, but Underwood drilled yet another three-pointer with 9 seconds left to make it 77-74. Horan was fouled and sealed the game with a pair of free throws to put Butler up 79-74. A Mends layup made it a three-point game at 79-76 with three seconds left, and Monserez iced the game with a pair of free throws with one second remaining to set the final score, 81-76.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Monserez. The senior scored a career-high 28 points in his final regular season game at Hinkle. He was 11-of-13 at the foul line, and added seven assists and five rebounds with just one turnover in 37 minutes.

Fellow seniors Lightfoot, Nick Gardner, and Ryan Reynolds joined Monserez in the starting lineup on senior night. Lightfoot finished with 16 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Gardner nailed a three-pointer to finish with three points. Reynolds did not attempt a shot and was scoreless. Horan finished with nine points. Brandon Crone had a career-high eight points along with three rebounds and a pair of steals. Avery Sheets added seven points, three assists, and two steals. Jamie Smalligan and Nick Brooks had five points each off the bench. YSU was led by Underwood's game-high 28 points, one short of his career high.

Butler shot an even 50% for the game, the first time this season they've reached that mark. They made it to the free throw line 28 times, connecting on 23 (82%), including 16-of-17 in the second half and 10-for-10 in the final two minutes to put the game away. Coach Todd Lickliter was pleased with the offense, but felt Butler's defense needed some improvement. "We didn't defend the way we would like to defend," Lickliter said. A great deal of that had to do with YSU's offense. "I think that they're one of the toughest teams we've had to defend, " he noted. "Every game we've ever played against them has been a challenge." Given that there's a very good chance that next week's opening round Horizon League Tournament game at Hinkle will be against these same Penguins, the scouting report should be fresh in their minds, and they'll know what they need to work on should they meet again next Tuesday.

The regular season finale sends the Bulldogs to Chicago to face the Illinois-Chicago Flames. Game time is Saturday, February 28, at 7:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised on FoxSports Midwest, FoxSports Chicago, and FoxSports North. Some online sources show the FS Midwest broadcast as being tape-delayed, while others show the game as airing live, so check your local listings to be sure.
