DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back as they cruised past the Youngstown State Penguins, 88-57, in the opening round of the Horizon League Tournament. With the win, Butler retains hosting rights for the tournament through at least the semi-finals on Saturday. Jamie Smalligan scored the game's first five points, and a Duane Lightfoot layup made it 7-0. A pair of free throws from YSU's Adam Baumann made it 7-2, then the Bulldogs blew the game open with a 16-6 run to make it 23-8 with 8:45 left in the first half. Butler pushed its lead to 19 three times in the opening frame, the last of which came at halftime at 45-26. Smalligan paced the Bulldogs with 18 first-half points, including four three-pointers. The Penguins scored the first two points of the second half on a Khari McQueen layup, but the Bulldogs responded with 10 unanswered points to make it 55-28 and take command. The lead never dipped below 25, and swelled to as much as 34 at 88-54 following a Ryan Reynolds layup with 16 seconds to go. An Allen Deep three-pointer made the final score 88-57.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Smalligan and Nick Brooks. With all due respect to Avery Sheets, who had a solid game in his own right, the freshmen tandem had the best games of their young Bulldog careers. Smalligan finished with career highs of 21 points and four three-pointers along with five rebounds, while Brooks also added a career-best 21 points. Smalligan was 8-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, while Brooks was a phenomenal 8-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-4 from long range.

Sheets also finished with 21 points and five rebounds, going 8-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Mike Monserez had five points, nine assists, and five rebounds. Reynolds, who had four career points entering tonight's game, finished with five points. Duane Lightfoot added four points and four rebounds. Brandon Crone had four points and three rebounds off the bench. Bruce Horan finished with three points, and Nick Gardner and Jeff James added two points each. YSU was led by Baumann's 21 points.

The stats pretty much speak for themselves. After shooting a season-best 50% last week against YSU, Butler flirted with 60% tonight, finishing at 59.6% for the game. YSU head coach John Robic said afterwards that their game plan was to take the ball out of Monserez' hands (who scored a career-high 28 points against them last week) and make other people take shots. They succeeded on both counts, but Smalligan, Sheets, and Brooks made them pay for it. Defensively, the Bulldogs played much better than they did last week, limiting the Penguins to 38% shooting for the game and 33% from three-point range, compared with 54% and 50%, respectively, last Wednesday. A tremendous way to start the HL Tournament, and hopefully a sign of things to come.

With the tourney remaining in Hinkle this weekend, the Bulldogs have the opportunity to exact revenge on a pair of teams that swept them in the regular season. Up next is the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix, who finished third in the league. Game time is Friday, March 5, at approximately 8:00 p.m. EST (30 minutes after the conclusion of the Detroit/Loyola game at 5:30). Hope to see you there.
