DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Bruce Horan's late-game heroics propelled the Butler Bulldogs to their first Horizon League road win and third in a row overall with a 67-66 overtime victory over the Youngstown State Penguins. YSU had an early 5-4 lead, but the Bulldogs scored seven unanswered points to make it 11-5, their biggest lead of the game. The Penguins took their biggest lead of the half at 18-15 on the third of Andy Jahnke's three three-point baskets in the opening frame. The teams played to a 23-23 tie at halftime. After hitting its first three-point attempt of the game, Butler missed its next 10 attempts from long range and finished the half 1-of-11 from downtown and 10-of-30 overall. Things stayed even to start the second half. A Duane Lightfoot free throw broke a 39-39 tie with just over 10 minutes left in regulation, but YSU reeled off eight unanswered points to take a 47-40 lead, their biggest of the contest. Butler responded with seven straight points of its own to knot things up at 47 apiece with 4:26 to go. While the Bulldogs were never able to regain the lead in regulation, they stayed close enough to have a chance to send it to overtime, which is just what they did. YSU led 54-49 when a Lightfoot basket closed the gap to three at 54-51 with 2:24 to go. After a YSU turnover, each team stepped up its defense, with YSU blocking a Lightfoot attempt followed by Butler blocking a Penguin shot at the other end. Avery Sheets hit a runner in the lane to make it 54-53. Both teams then failed to score on their next possession, and Jamie Smalligan fouled out of the game with 13.5 seconds left in regulation. YSU's Doug Underwood sank both free throws around a Butler timeout, making it 56-53. After another Butler timeout, the Bulldogs inbounded the ball and eventually got the ball to Horan, who got a beneficial roll on his three-point attempt and tied the game at 56-56 with around two seconds left. A desperation heave by YSU at the buzzer was no good, and for the second straight game, the Bulldogs headed to overtime.

Butler controlled the tip and Horan made another three-pointer to make it 59-56. Mike Monserez then fouled out of the game, and TeJay Anderson made both free throws to pull within one at 59-58. Following a Sheets missed three-pointer, Underwood was fouled and made both free throws to give YSU a 60-59 lead. Lightfoot answered with a basket of his own to make it 61-60. Horan was whistled for a foul and Adam Baumann nailed both free throws to put YSU back on top 62-61. Sheets drove the basket, hit a runner in the lane, was fouled, and had a chance for a conventional three-point play. But his free throw rimmed out, and Butler led 63-62. Anderson rebounded a Penguin miss and was credited for a basket following a goaltending call on Butler, putting YSU back in the lead 64-63. Baumann fouled Jeff James, who made the first of two free throws to tie the game at 64. YSU missed a shot at their end, but a Sheets three-pointer also bounced away for Butler and the rebound went out of bounds to Youngstown State with 1:04 remaining. Underwood's basket on the ensuing possession (his first of the game) gave the Penguins a 66-64 lead, setting the stage for Horan to once again work some magic. Following a Butler timeout with 23.8 seconds left, the Bulldogs inbounded the ball and found Sheets for a three-pointer which bounced away. But James corralled the rebound and passed to Bruce for another three-pointer, which he drained to give the Bulldogs a 67-66 lead with around 10 seconds remaining. YSU worked for the final shot, but Quin Humphrey's three-point shot at the buzzer was an airball, and Butler earned its first HL road win, 67-66.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Horan and Lightfoot. Horan's magic came late, with the game-tying three-pointer at the end of regulation marking his first points of the game. But he would hit two more big three's in overtime to finish with nine points, four rebounds, and two steals. Lightfoot had a career-high 25 points, 21 of which came after halftime. At one point in the second half, he scored 12 straight points for the Bulldogs. Maybe he's better suited to be a sixth man instead of a starter, or maybe his ankle is finally feeling better. Whatever the reason may be, Duane is playing some of his best basketball of the season, and it's no coincidence that the team is in the midst of its most successful stretch thus far.

Sheets finished with 17 points, his best showing since a career-high 25-point effort at St. Louis last month, along with four rebounds and four steals. Monserez finished with seven points, three assists and three rebounds, and James added seven points. Smalligan had two points and five rebounds. YSU was led by Baumann's double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.

A month ago, Butler loses this game in my opinion. When they were down seven, they easily could have thrown in the towel, but instead got right back into the game and put themselves in position to win. Granted, the first-half shooting could have been better, and after outrebounding their last three opponents, the Bulldogs were outboarded 39-26 tonight, but they found a way to win and got it done. And did so on the road, which hasn't happened since the end of November. The Bulldogs gained a lot of momentum last week with two wins at Hinkle, and it's nice to be able to return home still on a roll.

The Bulldogs have a chance to avenge an earlier defeat when the Wright State Raiders come to town. The Raiders are currently 6-1 in HL play and all alone in second place in the standings. Game time is Saturday, January 24, at 2:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live in Indianapolis on Comcast Cable channel 72 and in Dayton on Time Warner cable, and tape-delayed in Indianapolis on Sunday the 25th at 1:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
