DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Freshman A.J. Graves scored a career-high 29 points, including 14 of Butler's final 16 points, to carry the Bulldogs past the Ball State Cardinals 74-68 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The lead changed hands eight times over the first 10 minutes. The Cardinals led 12-11 at the 10:07 mark when a 9-0 Butler run gave the Bulldogs a lead they would not relinquish at 20-12 with 7:00 left in the half. Butler pushed its advantage out to 17 before a late Cardinal basket made the score 37-22 at halftime. The Bulldog lead fluctuated between nine and 15 points for the bulk of the second half. Butler led 64-52 with 3:45 to go, but a 10-2 BSU run cut the Butler lead to four at 66-62 with 0:47 left. Graves would hit all eight of his free throw attempts over the final 45 seconds, overcoming a pair of Cardinal three-pointers down the stretch to give the Bulldogs a 74-68 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Graves. The freshman scored 18 of his 29 points in the second half, repeatedly breaking down BSU's defense off the dribble and getting to the basket. And when the Cardinals fouled the freshman four times in the final minute, he sealed the game by calmly sinking all eight free throws. For the game, he was 10-of-15 from the floor and also pulled down five rebounds.

Graves' backcourtmate Avery Sheets finished with 14 points, five assists, two steals, and no turnovers in 35 minutes. Also finishing in double figures for Butler was Nick Brooks, who had 11 points and four rebounds. Bruce Horan finished with nine points and four rebounds, while Brandon Polk added eight points off the bench. Brandon Crone had three points. Jamie Smalligan did not score, but did pull down a team-high six rebounds. BSU was led by Terrance Chapman's 23 points and nine rebounds.

Butler coach Todd Lickliter praised Graves' defense. "I think that tonight he really defended well," Lickliter said. "His focus was on defending, and the offense flowed [from his defense]." Lickliter was pleased with his entire team's defense, and with the fact they only turned the ball over six times for the game, including just once in the first half. The Bulldogs continue to shoot well at home, eclipsing 50% in both halves en route to 53% for the game. Butler also made it to the free throw line 22 times, converting 18 (82%). BSU outrebounded the Bulldogs 31-26, including 10 offensive rebounds leading to 15 second chance points for the Cardinals, so that continues to be an area of concern. But overall, a terrific win for the Bulldogs against a tough in-state rival.

The Bulldogs hit the road for the Fiesta Bowl Classic in Tucson, AZ. The four-team tournament includes Butler, Richmond, Eastern Washington, and the host Arizona Wildcats. Butler will face Richmond in the opening round on Tuesday, December 28, at 6:00 p.m. EST.
