DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Cleveland State Vikings earned both their first-ever win at Hinkle Fieldhouse and their first-ever series sweep of the Butler Bulldogs with a 65-56 win. Butler held an 18-11 lead at the 10:41 mark when CSU scored eight straight points to take a 19-18 lead with 8:42 left in the half. A Jamie Smalligan free throw put the Bulldogs back in the lead, where they remained for the rest of the half, taking a 32-28 halftime lead. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 37-30 lead to start the second half, but once again an 8-0 CSU run put the Vikings up 38-37 at the 15:20 mark. The two teams battled back and forth over the next 10 minutes, with Butler taking a 51-50 lead on a Brandon Polk layup with 5:16 remaining. That's when CSU took over the game, scoring 15 of the game's final 20 points to earn the series sweep and snap a 10-game losing streak at Hinkle with a 65-56 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Brandon Crone. Brandon was just short of a double-double, finishing with nine points and eight rebounds.

Polk led the Bulldogs with 13 points along with three rebounds and three assists. A. J. Graves was Butler's only other double figure scorer with 10 points. Avery Sheets added seven points, while fellow junior Bruce Horan finished with six. Gary Patterson had five points, Jamie Smalligan added four points and three rebounds, and Brian Ligon chipped in two points and four rebounds. CSU was led by Omari Westley, who finished with 21 points and nine rebounds despite quite visibly suffering the effects of the flu.

"We held onto the ball too long in the second half, " said Butler coach Todd Lickliter, "and struggled to execute when they turned the pressure up." I'm not sure what happens to this team around the 5:00 mark in the second half, but the offense seems to stop moving the ball and attacking the basket, points are few and far between, and all the momentum seems to swing to the opposition. "I thought our ball movement in the second half was really poor, very poor, " noted Lickliter. "If you saw the Loyola game, the Green Bay game, we moved the basketball, we shared it, we got people open, we shot open shots. You have to move the ball, and [tonight] we dribbled it and held on to it."

The brief homestand comes to an end with a visit from the Detroit Titans. Game time is Saturday, February 12, at 12:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on FoxSports Midwest and FoxSports Detroit. Hope to see you there.
