PLAYER OF THE GAME: Polk. Posting far and away Butler's best individual effort of the game, Brandon finished with a team-high 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting to go along with two rebounds, three blocks, and three steals.
Butler's other double-figure scorer was Bruce Horan with 10 points. A. J. Graves added seven points, three rebounds, and three assists. Brandon Crone had seven points and seven rebounds. Avery Sheets had six points but committed six turnovers without an assist. Brian Ligon finished with four points and five rebounds, while Jamie Smalligan had a late triple for three points. CSU was led by Raheem Moss' 21 points.
I'm not sure what more can be said. CSU obviously came out with a lot more intensity and demonstrated from their first possession that they would be dictating the flow of the game. Yet again, Butler was pounded on the boards, with CSU owning a 35-21 rebounding advantage, including 13 on the offensive end. The only way the Bulldogs can hope to win with that sort of rebounding discrepancy is to shoot the ball well, and that certainly didn't happen. Taking out Polk's numbers, the rest of the team was 11-for-38 (29%). While I certainly hope we've bottomed out and will start to show some sort of improvement (and/or the desire to improve), I fear the two remaining games on this road trip could be quite painful for Bulldog fans.
The next stop on the three-game roadie is the UIC Pavilion where the Bulldogs face the UIC Flames. Game time is Saturday, January 29, at 4:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet Chicago.
