DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs earned a split of their season series with the Detroit Titans with a 65-50 victory at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Detroit held two early leads, at 2-0 on the game's first basket by Brandon Cotton, and again on a three-pointer by James Thues to make it 7-6. That's when the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run, keyed by back-to-back three-pointers from Bruce Horan, to take the lead for good. Butler saw its lead swell from 20-15 to 29-15 thanks to Brandon Crone, who nailed three consecutive three-pointers. Butler was held scoreless for the remaining 7:54 of the half as Detroit ended the opening frame on a 7-0 run to cut their deficit in half at 29-22. Brandon Polk finally ended Butler's scoring drought with a basket at the 18:24 mark of the second half. Back-to-back baskets from Cotton brought the Titans to within three at 31-28. It was 35-31 Butler when the Bulldogs got a layup from Brian Ligon and a pair of layups from A. J. Graves (with a free throw from Graves for a conventional three-point play) to take command at 42-31 with 13:19 remaining. A pair of Cotton free throws put the Titans within nine, but a Horan three-pointer would put the Bulldogs back up by double digits, where they would stay for the rest of the contest. Their biggest lead was at 58-40 following a Gary Patterson three-pointer, and the Bulldogs survived a late 7-0 Titan run to earn a 65-50 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Graves. A. J. has had his struggles lately, but today resembled the player who scored 29 against Ball State back in December, finishing with 21 points and three rebounds. He was also 6-of-7 from the foul line, but by my math is still half a free throw short of meeting the NCAA's minimum attempt guideline of 2.5 per game (23 games X 2.5 attempts/game = 57.5 attempts; A. J. now has 57 on the season, and I'm guessing they round up). Regardless of whether or not it shows up on the NCAA's national leaders list, his 95% is very impressive.

Three other Bulldogs finished in double figures. Bruce Horan was 5-of-10 from three-point range for 15 points along with four rebounds. Polk added 12 points and three rebounds. Crone had 11 points and three rebounds. Brian Ligon and Gary Patterson each finished with three points and four rebounds off the bench. Detroit was led by Cotton's game-high 22 points.

Butler's ball movement today was head and shoulders above what we saw Thursday night in a loss to Cleveland State, and the results show on the stat sheet. Despite the 9:30 dry spell spanning both halves, the Bulldogs still shot 46% for the game (52% in the second half) and 42% from three-point range. They had 11 assists on 21 baskets, and committed a season-low six turnovers. Their defense was stellar, holding Detroit to 36% shooting overall and 31% from long range, and holding the Titans starting frontcourt of Ryvon Covile and Torvoris Baker without a field goal. Crone and Polk played their tails off against the imposing Titan front line, with help from Ligon and Jamie Smalligan. Detroit outrebounded Butler 31-27, but the Bulldogs more than held their own compared to the 43-17 Titan advantage on the boards last month in Detroit. A solid effort from the Bulldogs, and hopefully one they can build on as the regular season winds down.

A tough road game awaits the Bulldogs as they travel to Milwaukee to face the UWM Panthers. Game time is Wednesday, February 16, at 8:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on FoxSports Detroit and RSN Alternate, with rebroadcasts occuring on FoxSports Ohio and FoxSports Cincinnati (2/17 @ 3:00 am EST) and Fox Sports Midwest (2/17 @ 4:00 a.m. & 2/18 @ 1:00 p.m.).
