Crone at 2:49, 2nd Half --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Brandon Crone. Brandon was scoreless in the opening round loss to Richmond, but provided a big spark off the bench tonight with 13 points before fouling out.
A. J. Graves led the Bulldogs with 15 points and five assists. Jamie Smalligan added 13 points and four rebounds, earning all-tournament team honors for his efforts. Bruce Horan and Avery Sheets had six points each, with Sheets adding four assists. Nick Brooks finished with four points, three rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Brandon Polk added three points and three rebounds, while Gary Patterson finished with two points. EWU was led by Marc Axton's 25 points and six rebounds.
As was the case in the opener against Richmond, Butler's defense was nowhere to be found. Since halftime of the Ball State game, the Bulldogs have allowed the opposition to shoot 71-of-111 from the floor (64%), including halves of 71% two nights ago and 75% tonight. Until there is a consistent commitment to defense where all five players on the floor trust the system and one another, the zero in the 'road wins' column won't be changing any time soon. They are certainly playing much better at home, but must avoid the mindset that everything will be fine once they return to Hinkle.
Butler kicks off Horizon League play at home next week with a pair of games against the Wisconsin contingent. First up are the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers. Game time is Thursday, January 6, at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised live in Milwaukee on WMLW TV-41.
