PLAYER OF THE GAME: Horan. Bruce connected on 4-of-8 from three point range, and even snuck in a fast break layup to finish with 14 points. He also pulled down a game-high (and career-best) seven rebounds.
Nick Brooks led all scorers with 15 points, and added four rebounds. A.J. Graves added nine points, six assists, and five rebounds off the bench. Brandon Crone had eight points and three rebounds. Gary Patterson scored his first points as a Bulldog, finishing with eight points. Jamie Smalligan had seven points, while Avery Sheets, Brandon Polk, and Brian Ligon added five points apiece. Polk also hauled in five rebounds. Andy Grunst finished with three points and four rebounds. The Panthers were led by Brandon Martin's 14 points and four rebounds.
I won't spend much time picking apart a 36-point victory over a Division-III team. It was sloppy at times (14 BU turnovers), and I would liked to have seen us try and establish more of an inside game against an outsized opponent (29 of Butler's 57 shot attempts were three-pointers). But we shot 51% for the game and 41% from long range, and the game was never in question, so I'm not overly worked up about it.
The Bulldogs will get their first true test of the season this Saturday when their three-game homestand comes to a close against the Miami Redhawks. MU has opened the season with impressive wins over Purdue and Xavier, and should present Butler with quite a challenge at both ends of the floor. Game time is Saturday, November 27, at 2:00 p.m. Hope to see you there.
