PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Crone and Polk. The Brandons came up big once again, each finishing with a new career high in scoring. Polk led Butler with 27 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while Crone added 20 points and eight rebounds.
Graves finished with 16 points and six assists. Avery Sheets added nine points and four assists. Horan added six points, while Jamie Smalligan chipped in five points and five rebounds off the bench. Patterson finished with three points. UIC was led by Cedrick Banks' game-high 28 points. Banks also became UIC's all-time leading scorer with his first basket, a three-pointer at the 17:42 mark which he converted into a four-point play with a free throw.
The Bulldogs have won three straight games for the first time since they opened the season with three consecutive wins. "We're playing our best basketball right now, " noted Butler head coach Todd Lickliter. Even so, a hot-shooting UIC squad once again put quite a few points on the board. In the first meeting at UIC, the Flames shot 67% for the game, including 71% in the first half; today, they managed 60% for the game and 65% in the second half. "They're hard to defend, " said Lickliter. "Banks is really good." Butler shot 53% for the game and 48% from three-point range, leading to their highest point total of the season. Butler's 18 assists were its highest total since the Bulldogs had 19 assists against IPFW in December. The Bulldogs held their own on the boards, as UIC held just a 29-26 rebounding advantage. "I thought Crone, Polk, and Smalligan did a really nice job on the boards, " Lickliter said. "I was really pleased with that." A great way to end the regular season, and hopefully something the Bulldogs can build upon as they enter the Horizon League tournament.
Butler awaits the outcome of today's UW-Milwaukee @ Cleveland State game to determine what seed it will have in the tournament, and where they will play. By my calculations, if CSU wins, Butler will be the #8 seed and face the #5 seed, either at Loyola or at UIC. If CSU loses, Butler will be the #7 seed and travel to Wright State, who would be the #6 seed.
