PLAYER OF THE GAME: Polk. Brandon provided a huge spark off the bench, and scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half. He really helped the Bulldogs snap out of their offensive funk, and gave them a much-needed presence inside when the three-pointers weren't falling. He finished 6-of-8 from the floor (with one of the missed attempts being a three-pointer to avoid a shot clock violation) and pulled down three rebounds.
Horan also had 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range along with three rebounds. He is now shooting 50% (28-of-56) from downtown on the season. Also finishing in double figures was Sheets, who had 10 points, seven assists, three rebounds, and no turnovers in 31 minutes. Jamie Smalligan finished with seven points and three rebounds. Brandon Crone added seven points, five rebounds, and four assists off the bench. Brian Ligon had six points, four rebounds, and two blocks in 17 minutes, his most extended playing time of the season thus far. Nick Brooks had five points and seven rebounds. A.J. Graves and Gary Patterson finished with three points each, and Andy Grunst added two. IPFW was led by Simon's 14 points.
The stat that jumped out at me the most was Simon's rebound total. With all the rebounding woes the Bulldogs suffered through during their three-game losing streak, it was nice to see them hold Simon to just one rebound, nearly eight below his average. Butler outrebounded IPFW 35-24 and held the Mastodons to seven offensive rebounds and six second chance points, all significant improvements over the past few games. The defense was also much better, as Butler held IPFW to 31% shooting for the game, including just 17% from three-point range.
With the losing streak snapped, the Bulldogs look to build a winning streak when the Ball State Cardinals come to Hinkle. Game time is Wednesday, December 22, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
