DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

David Moss' game-high 29 points, including his team's final nine points, led the Indiana State Sycamores to a 57-54 win over the Butler Bulldogs at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute, IN. Things started well for the Bulldogs, as they connected on eight of their first 10 shots and jumped out to a 19-4 lead. But the Sycamores fought back, thanks in large part to eight points in the paint from Amani Daanish, and closed to 25-19 at halftime. Butler was held scoreless for the final 4:04 of the first half. That drought carried over into the second half, as the Bulldogs went until a Bruce Horan jumper at the 18:01 mark without a point. Despite their offensive woes, Butler led from the game's first point until a Daanish tip-in tied the game at 27 with 15:57 left. It was back-and-forth from there, as the lead changed hands several times over the next 11 minutes. The game's fifth tie came at the 4:55 mark, 48-48. Moss connected on a three-pointer with 2:23 to go to give the Sycamores a lead they would not relinquish. Jamie Smalligan's jumper cut the lead to 51-50. Moss and Nick Brooks each hit a pair of free throws and a jumper to make it 55-54 with 26 seconds left. Brooks was fouled on his basket and had a chance to tie the game, but was unable to make the free throw. There was a jump ball on the rebound attempt, and the possession arrow pointed to the Bulldogs. Brooks missed a three-pointer on the ensuing possession, and Moss pulled down the rebound and was fouled. He connected on both free throws to make it 57-54 with 5.9 seconds left. Bruce Horan's three-point attempt to tie the game at the buzzer was no good, and the Sycamores held on for a 57-54 win, snapping a three-game losing streak to Butler.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Brooks. Nick came off the bench for the first time this season, and responded with 13 points and five rebounds, both of which tied him for team-high honors. He also made it to the free throw line for seven of Butler's 10 attempts from the charity stripe, connecting on five.

Horan also finished with 13 points. A.J. Graves, getting his first collegiate start, had 11 points and four assists. Avery Sheets finished with five points, three assists, and three steals. Smalligan had five points and four rebounds off the bench. Brandon Crone had four points and three rebounds. Brian Ligon saw his first action in three games and finished with two points. Brandon Polk had one point and five rebounds in his first start as a Bulldog. ISU, as mentioned previously, was led by Moss' 29 points and eight rebounds.

The rebounding situation was slightly better than it was at Bradley earlier in the week, but the Bulldogs were still outrebounded 36-22 and gave up 11 offensive rebounds, leading to 10 second chance points for ISU. The defense is also a concern: after holding the Sycamores to 19 points on 35% shooting in the first half, ISU upped those numbers to 38 and 58%, respectively, in the second frame. After being outscored in the paint 14-8 in the first half, the Sycamores held a 16-4 advantage there after halftime, which led to their improved shooting percentage. As Butler's defense improves, so will its rebounding. But there needs to be a commitment from the entire team to that improvement, every day in practice as well as for 40 minutes each game, before the results on the scoreboard will change.

The Bulldogs return home for finals week and will return to action next Saturday against IPFW. Game time is Saturday, December 18, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
