DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs earned their first Horizon League victory, their first victory away from Hinkle Fieldhouse, and snapped a four-game losing streak with a hard-fought 77-72 overtime victory over the Loyola Ramblers at the Gentile Center. Loyola jumped out to an early 10-3 lead. It was 12-5 Ramblers when Butler scored eight unanswered points to take a 13-12 lead with 12:38 left in the half. The Bulldogs eventually took a six-point lead at 25-19 and again at 27-21, and would hold a 30-26 advantage at halftime. Butler's lead got to six two more times to start the second half, the latter of which was at 34-28. But Loyola used a pair of three-pointers to key a 10-2 burst which put them ahead 38-36. The Ramblers held a four-point lead on the Bulldogs five times, with the last one coming on a 4-0 run to make it 60-56 with around 4:00 to go in regulation. Avery Sheets connected on a three-pointer to put the Bulldogs within one, but an Anthony Smith rebound basket made it 62-59 Loyola. A Bruce Horan three-pointer tied the score at 62-62. Loyola's Tyrelle Blair was fouled, but missed the front end of a one-and-one with Butler controlling the rebound. The Bulldogs had a chance to win the game on the final possession of regulation, but Sheets' fadeaway shot was no good, and the game went to overtime.

Brandon Polk's rebound dunk off a Horan missed three-pointer got the scoring underway in overtime. A pair of free throws from Smith tied the score at 64-64, but A. J. Graves connected on a runner in the lane to put the Bulldogs in the lead to stay, 66-64. A Nick Brooks basket and a pair of free throws from Sheets made it 70-64, and Butler made 7-of-8 free throws over the final minute of overtime to seal a 77-72 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Polk. For the third straight game, Brandon set a new career high in scoring, finishing with a game-high 24 points. And just for good measure, he finished with 11 rebounds, also a career-best effort, and in doing so notched Butler's first double-double of the season. He was 8-of-15 from the floor, 8-of-10 from the free throw line, and also made three steals.

Sheets finished with 17 points, 16 of which came after halftime, along with four rebounds and four assists. Horan added 11 points. Graves had 10 points and five rebounds. Brooks had a solid game off the bench, finishing with eight points and seven rebounds before fouling out. Gary Patterson added five points, while Brandon Crone finished with two. Loyola was led by Blake Schilb's 22 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.

Butler needed a win in the worst way after digging themselves an 0-2 hole in league play at home last week, and did what they needed to do to get one. They weathered a slow start, didn't buckle when their lead in the second half evaporated, and didn't give up when the Ramblers seemed to always push their lead back to four whenever the Dawgs got withing striking distance. Polk's continued emergence as an inside threat can only bode well for Butler's perimeter attack, as he will keep defenses honest inside. A nice win to get, and hopefully one the team can build upon.

Unfortunately the road does not get any easier for the Bulldogs, as they have around 40 hours to recover from this game and make the trip to Detroit to face the Titans. Game time is Saturday, January 15, at 2:00 p.m. EST.
