DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs broke open a halftime tie with an 18-2 run to start the second half en route to a 61-48 victory over the previously unbeaten Miami RedHawks. The visitors led for a majority of the opening frame, pushing their advantage to as many as five at 17-12 with 5:20 left in the half. But the Bulldogs would battle back to tie the game at 17 on five straight points from A.J. Graves. A pair of dunks from Jamie Smalligan and Brandon Polk helped Butler take a 21-all tie into the locker room. Neither team was able to eclipse the 40% mark in the first half. The score remained knotted at 21 for the first two-and-a-half minutes of the second period before a Smalligan basket broke the scoring drought. A Danny Horace layup at the 16:18 mark would be the only points MU would put on the board for the first eight minutes of the half, as the Bulldogs outscored the RedHawks 18-2 to take a 39-23 lead with 11:58 to go. A pair of Horace free throws at the 11:41 mark snapped the scoreless skid for Miami, but by then the damage had been done. The Butler lead swelled to 17 on two occasions, the latter of which came at 54-37 with just under five minutes left. The RedHawks pulled to within 11 on a Doug Penno three-pointer to make it 56-45 with 2:19 remaining, but could get no closer. A Bruce Horan three-pointer and a pair of free throws from Graves made it 61-45, and a late three from Penno set the final score, 61-48.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Smalligan. The stat sheet showed an impressive game for Jamie: 16 points, 4-of-7 from three-point range, six rebounds. But what the box score doesn't show was the tremendous defense he played on MU's Horace. Jamie drew the tough defensive assignment of guarding arguably the RedHawks' top player, and responded with his best defensive effort to date. A solid all-around game from the sophomore center.

Three other Bulldogs joined Smalligan in double figures. Horan nailed five triples en route to 16 points and five rebounds. Avery Sheets added 11 points and eight assists with no turnovers in 29 minutes. Sheets has now played 81 minutes of turnover-free ball at point guard on the season. Graves finished with 10 points and three rebounds. Brandon Crone and Nick Brooks finished with three points each, and Polk added two points. MU was led by Horace's double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.

I must confess to having my concerns coming into this game. But the defense I saw the Bulldogs play for 40 minutes proved to me that my fears were unfounded. Miami was 22-of-33 from three-point range entering the game; they finished 4-of-16 (25%) today, including 0-for-7 in the first half. Chet Mason, averaging 17 ppg through the RedHawks' first two games, was held to just six, thanks in large part to Horan's defense. And while Horace did manage a double-double, Jamie made him earn every point. The offense struggled in the first half, but whatever adjustments were made at halftime worked brilliantly. And even when the shots weren't falling, the Bulldogs still played solid defense. A very impressive win for Butler, and one they can hopefully build on as they hit the road for the first time this season.

First up on the Bulldogs' three-game road trip are the Bobcats of Ohio University. Game time is Thursday, December 2, at 7:00 p.m. EST.
