DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Ohio Bobcats handed the Butler Bulldogs their first loss of the season with a 64-58 win at the Convocation Center in Athens, OH. Butler held a 12-10 lead with 12:23 left in the half when the host Bobcats went on a 7-0 run to lead 17-12 at the 8:51 mark. Butler fought back to tie the game at 19 apiece with 6:37 to go in the half, but Ohio scored eight unanswered points to take a 27-19 lead with 4:39 remaining, a lead the Bobcats would not relinquish. A Bruce Horan three-pointer made it 27-22, but OU scored six of the final eight points in the half to take a 33-24 lead at the break. Turnovers plagued the Bulldogs in the opening frame, as the visitors committed 11 miscues leading to 12 Bobcat points. Ohio also made nine trips to the foul line compared to none for Butler.

The Bobcats pushed their lead to 11 on two occasions in the second half, but a 7-0 Butler run brought the Bulldogs to within four at 39-35 with 15:43 left. The Bulldogs would cut the deficit to just two points at 44-42 and again at 46-44. Ohio then got a big three-pointer from Jeff Halbert to go up 49-44 at the 12:07 mark. It was 55-48 with 9:49 left, and the only points scored over the next four minutes came on a Brandon Crone basket. The Bobcats went without a field goal for eight-and-a-half minutes, but hit enough free throws to keep the Bulldogs at bay. A fastbreak layup by Jeremy Fears with 1:14 left ended the OU drought from the floor and made it 61-55. An Avery Sheets three-pointer brought Butler to within three points, but the Bobcats got another Fears layup and a Halbert free throw to seal a 64-58 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Brandon Polk. The junior college transfer had the best game of his young Bulldog career, finishing with 13 points and six rebounds, both of which were career highs. He was 6-for-8 from the floor, and provided a big spark off the bench.

Horan led all scorers with 17 points. Crone added career-highs of 10 points and six rebounds. Nick Brooks added eight points and five rebounds. Sheets struggled through a 2-of-12 shooting night for five points, but added six assists and a pair of steals. A.J. Graves finished with three points, and Jamie Smalligan added two points and four rebounds. Ohio was led by Fears' 16 points.

As mentioned previously, the Bulldogs dug themselves a first-half hole in large part due to turnovers and not getting to the foul line. Those situations were largely rectified in the second half, as the Bulldogs committed just four turnovers while connecting on 13-of-15 free throws (87%). The problem in the final 20 minutes was poor shooting, particularly from three-point range. After shooting 46% overall and 40% from three-point range in the opening frame, the Bulldogs managed just 28% in the second half, including 3-of-19 (16%) from long range. Butler's defense gave them plenty of opportunities to get back in the game, but the offense could never quite take full advantage.

The Bulldogs hope to regroup as their three-game road trip continues next week against the Bradley Braves. Game time is Tuesday, December 7, at 8:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
