DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs jumped out to a 16-2 lead and never looked back as they opened the 2004-05 season with an 80-52 win over the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. The Bulldogs held a 3-2 advantage at the 18:37 mark when they reeled off 13 unanswered points over the next five minutes to take a 16-2 lead. The Jackrabbits battled back to within seven on two occasions, the latter of which came at 21-14 with 6:36 left in the half. But that was as close as the visitors would get for the remainder of the contest, as Butler closed the half on a 15-1 run to take a 36-15 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Bulldogs shot 52% from the field in the half while holding the Jackrabbits to just 24%, and turned eight SDSU turnovers into 12 points. The Butler lead was cut to 16 at 43-27 with 16:11 remaining, but soon swelled back to 27 thanks to a 13-2 run which gave the Bulldogs a 56-29 advantage with 12:33 to go. BU took its biggest lead at 76-44 with 2:37 left, and cruised to an 80-52 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Nick Brooks. The sophomore led all scorers with 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting. He also dished out three assists.

Joining Brooks in double figures was fellow sophomore Jamie Smalligan, who finished with 10 points, six rebounds, and four assists along with a pair of blocks. Avery Sheets, in his first game action since his emergency appendectomy on November 4, had nine points, six assists, and no turnovers in 26 minutes. Brandon Crone added nine points and four rebounds. Bruce Horan also finished with nine points. Brandon Polk had eight points off the bench. Brian Ligon added seven points and five rebounds in nine minutes. Drew Streicher had seven points, and A.J. Graves finished with three points, three assists, and three steals. SDSU was led by Steve Holdren's 14 points and nine rebounds.

Butler continued to shoot the ball well, finishing at 52% overall for the game and 46% from three-point range. They turned the ball over just seven times, a significant improvement over last week's exhibition game. Butler coach Todd Lickliter was pleased with how eager his team was to share the ball, and attributed the shooting percentages to how well the Bulldogs were passing the ball. Their 22 assists would certainly attest to that. He was also happy with the help defense the Bulldogs played, although he still felt there was room for improvement. SDSU head coach Scott Nagy felt his squad was very nervous to start the game, leading to the poor start, but played much better once they calmed down. He said the biggest positive for him was the fact that they were able to match a bigger Bulldog team on the boards at 32 apiece.

The Bulldogs continue their three-game homestand to start the season next Monday when the Greenville Panthers come to town. Game time is Monday, November 22, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
