DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs defeated the St. Joseph's Pumas 89-72 in exhibition play at Hinkle Fieldhouse. (EDITOR'S NOTE: I was out of town for the game, so my commentary is limited to what I can glean from the box score and from what I was told by those in attendance.) The Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-0 lead, and led 41-24 at halftime, paced by Bruce Horan's 12 first-half points. Butler's shooting percentage from the first half was incredible: 14-of-19 overall (74%), including 7-of-9 from 3-point range (78%). The two squads posted identical 48-point totals for the second half, though SJC did pull to within 10 at 64-54.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: A.J. Graves. The freshman phenom made quite a splash in his home debut. Starting in place of Avery Sheets, who was sidelined after an emergency appendectomy last week, Graves finished with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 3-for-5 from long range.

Horan appeared to be in mid-season form, finishing with a game-high 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting from three-point range. He also pulled down four rebounds and dished out four assists. Nick Brooks had a solid effort with 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Jamie Smalligan had 11 points and six rebounds, while Brandon Polk added 11 points, four rebounds, and three blocks. Brandon Crone had nine points and four rebounds. Gary Patterson finished with five points, and Brian Ligon had one point in his first game action since tearing his ACL at Loyola last season. SJC was led by Sullivan Sykes' 17 points.

The offensive numbers were impressive: 89 points, 14-of-18 from three-point range, 64% shooting for the game. They also outrebounded the Pumas, who had a 44-41 rebounding advantage at Notre Dame last week, 32-24. 17 turnovers are a bit of a concern, but I would guess a great deal of that can be attributed to Avery's absence. All in all, a solid effort, and a great momentum builder heading into the regular season.

The Bulldogs will tip off the 2004-05 regular season against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, who are in the process making the transition to Division I play. Game time is Friday, November 19, at 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you there.
