DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS
Poor rebounding coupled with a poor-shooting second half dropped the Butler Bulldogs to 1-3 in Horizon League play following a 72-59 loss to the Detroit Titans at Calihan Hall. Detroit grabbed an early 5-0 lead, but the Bulldogs made a 14-4 run keyed entirely by Avery Sheets (eight points) and A. J Graves (six) to jump ahead 14-9. Butler remained in the lead until a Jon Goode three-pointer put the Titans back on top 25-24. It was 30-26 Detroit when a Bruce Horan three-pointer pulled the Bulldogs to within one, then following a Titan free throw, Horan buried another triple to give the Bulldogs a 32-31 lead. It would prove to be their last, as a Torvoris Baker basket to close the half put Detroit on top for good, 33-32. The Titans began the second half with an 8-2 run to jump out to a 41-34 lead, but a 5-0 Butler run made it 41-39. Brandon Polk kept the Bulldogs close, scoring Butler's next four points to stay within three of the Titans, but the momentum soon swung to the Titans. A 10-0 Detroit run put the hosts on top 56-43, and they were never seriously threatened thereafter as they cruised to a 72-59 win.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Sheets. Avery led all scorers at halftime with 13 points. Unfortunately, he was unable to add to that total in the second half, but he did finish with seven rebounds and six assists.
Horan led the Bulldogs with 15 points, all on three-pointers. Graves added 11 points, and Polk finished with 10. Brandon Crone had five points and four rebounds, while Nick Brooks also finished with five points. Brandon Cotton led a balanced Detroit attack with 16 points.
The rebounding woes returned once again, as Detroit absolutely obliterated Butler on the boards, 43-17. Detroit had more offensive rebounds (18) than the Bulldogs managed in total, which led to 28 second chance points for the Titans. At halftime, Butler was getting outrebounded 17-8, but kept it close by shooting 57% overall and 67% from three-point range. When those numbers dipped to 32% and 29%, respectively, in the second half, Butler's fate was sealed. Detroit also got to the free throw line 24 times, compared to just 10 for the Bulldogs.

After splitting a pair of road games, Butler returns home for a pair of HL contests, starting with the Youngstown State Penguins. Game time is Wednesday, January 19, at 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you there.
