DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

A cold-shooting second half turned a six-point game at halftime into a blowout as the UIC Flames defeated the Butler Bulldogs 73-49 at the UIC Pavilion. UIC never trailed in the contest, although Butler tied the game three times in the first half, the last of which came at 13-13 with 12:12 to go. The Flames pushed their lead to nine twice in the opening frame, but the Bulldogs closed to within six at halftime, 37-31. Unfortunately, the second half was anything but close. Butler managed just two field goals (a pair of three-pointers from Bruce Horan) and three free throws for the first 16:30 of the period, as UIC used a 31-9 run to open up a 68-40 advantage. The Bulldogs would get no closer than 20 down the stretch as the Flames won easily, 73-49.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Horan. Bruce had been quiet of late, but busted out in a big way in this game. He connected on 6-of-11 three-pointers for a season-high 18 points.

Butler's other double-figure scorer was Brandon Polk with 10 points and three rebounds. Avery Sheets had five points and six assists coming off the bench for the first time this season. Gary Patterson added four points. Nick Brooks finished with three points and three rebounds, while A. J. Graves added three points and three assists. Brandon Crone had two points, three rebounds, and three assists. Drew Streicher added two points, while Jamie Smalligan and Brian Ligon added one point each. UIC was led by Rocky Collum's 20 points and seven assists.

The first half looked promising, but even then the Bulldogs were living on borrowed time. They were within six despite turning the ball over 11 times in the opening frame and allowing UIC to shoot 15-of-21 (71%), mainly because Butler shot 60% themselves, including six three-pointers. After halftime however, Butler was just 5-for-20 (25%) from the floor. And while they turned the ball over just six more times, UIC's hot shooting continued as the Flames shot 63% in the second half and 67% for the game. UIC outscored Butler 38-6 in the paint and 22-9 off turnovers.

Butler's three-game road trip ends with a trip to Wisconsin-Green Bay to battle the Phoenix. Game time is Monday, January 31, at 8:30 p.m. EST.
