DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs fell behind the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers by eight points in overtime and were unable to connect on a potential game-tying three-point attempt at the buzzer, losing their HL opener 71-68. UWM led for a good portion of the opening frame, opening up a 23-18 lead at the 8:06 mark. But the Bulldogs scored six straight points on three-pointers by Avery Sheets and Brandon Crone to take a 24-23 advantage. The game bounced back and forth from there, with UWM taking a 29-28 lead on a Joah Tucker basket with 4:07 left in the half. That would be the last time the Panthers would have the lead in regulation, as Butler closed the half on a 5-0 run to lead 33-29 at the break. The Bulldogs pushed their lead to seven on three occasions in the second half, but could never get a double-digit lead and take control of the game. An A. J. Graves three-pointer with 2:35 remaining gave Butler a 57-51 lead. But four Tucker free throws and a pair of rebound tip-ins by Adrian Tigert, sandwiched around two Crone free throws, evened the score at 59-59 with 1:14 to go. Each team then missed a shot, but Butler still had a chance to win the game in regulation. Sheets looked to play Panther-killer at Hinkle for the second time in three years with a last-second three-pointer, but it bounced out and the game went into overtime. UWM scored the first six points of overtime, then took a 70-62 lead on a Tigert free throw with 0:45 to go. Crone hit a pair of free throws to cut it to six, then Graves stole the ball from Tucker at the other end. Tucker was called for an intentional foul on Graves, his fifth personal, and Graves hit both free throws and a layup on the ensuing possession to get the Bulldogs with two at 70-68 with 27.9 seconds left. Butler then fouled Chris Hill, a 81% free throw shooter coming into the game. But Hill missed both free throws, giving the Bulldogs a chance to tie. Following a timeout, Sheets drove the lane, drew multiple defenders, then dropped a perfect pass to Crone on the left block. James Wright made sure Crone wouldn't get an easy layup, fouling him with 5.7 seconds left and sending him to the foul line. Unfortunately, Crone missed both free throws and the Bulldogs were forced to foul Hill again with 3.2 seconds remaining. Hill converted just one of his two free throws, giving the Bulldogs one final chance to tie. But Nick Brooks' desperation three-pointer at the horn was no good, and the Panthers came away with a hard-fought 71-68 overtime win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Graves. The freshman phenom led Butler with 19 points along with three assists and two steals.

Brandon Polk, earning his second start of the year, responded with 16 points and three rebounds. Crone added 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Sheets finished with nine points, four rebounds, and three assists. Jamie Smalligan added seven points and four rebounds. Bruce Horan had three points, while Brooks and Brian Ligon finished with two points each. UWM was led by Tucker's game-high double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Allowing offensive rebounds once again killed the Bulldogs, as UWM outrebounded Butler 43-25, including 18 offensive boards which led to 16 second chance points. That, coupled with a lackluster offense at the close of regulation and the start of overtime, sealed Butler's fate. In a style of play which places tremendous importance on each possession, the Bulldogs simply cannot afford to have possessions on offense where they don't get a really good look at the basket coupled with allowing the opposition multiple shot attempts per possession on defense. Butler did do a good job defending UWM's leading scorer, Ed McCants, who was held to 12 points on 5-of-14 shooting (1-of-7 on three-pointers) after lighting up Detroit for a career-high 38 points in his previous game.

Butler looks to regroup when the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix comes to town. Game time is Saturday, January 8, at noon EST. Hope to see you there.
