DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs held off a late rally by the visiting Valparaiso Crusaders en route to a 72-69 Bracket Buster Saturday victory. An Avery Sheets three-pointer at the 17:01 mark gave the Bulldogs a 7-4 lead, one they would hold for the remainder of the contest. Butler pushed its lead to eight at 21-13 following a Brandon Crone three-pointer with 8:10 to go in the half. Valpo would hold the Bulldogs scoreless over the next 6:02, scoring six unanswered points to pull within two at 21-19. An A. J. Graves three-pointer broke the scoring drought for Butler, and the Bulldogs would take a 27-24 halftime lead. Butler slowly pushed its lead out to double figures, and led by as many as 13 at 53-40 with 8:32 left. A 12-4 Valpo run made it 57-52, but a Crone layup and a Bruce Horan three-pointer gave Butler a 10-point lead at 62-52 with 2:28 left. The Bulldogs finished the game by going 10-of-10 from the free throw line (including 8-for-8 from Graves), holding off a late Valpo rally which included two three-pointers in the final 0:14 from Ron Howard to earn a 72-69 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Brandon Polk. Brandon was a pair of rebounds short of his second straight double-double, finishing with 19 points and eight rebounds.

Sheets finished with 17 points and four assists. Graves added 15 points and three steals. Crone had 13 points and six rebounds. Horan finished with eight points and three rebounds. Valpo was led by Howard's 20 points.

It was good to see the Bulldogs withstand Valpo's late comeback attempt and remain in the lead the entire time. The game was fun to watch, with neither team calling it quits and battling right up until the final buzzer.

The Bulldogs wrap up the regular season with a pair of Horizon League contests, one on the road and one at home. Up first is a trip to Youngstown State to battle the Penguins. Game time is Wednesday, February 23, at 7:00 p.m. EST.
