PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Polk and Crone. The two Brandons were far and away Butler's best players in this game. Polk finished with a game-high and career-best 17 points along with eight rebounds, while Crone hauled down 14 rebounds, also a game-high and career-best, along with eight points.
Bruce Horan finished with six points and three rebounds. Patterson also finished with six points. Jamie Smalligan had five points and three rebounds. A. J. Graves suffered through an 0-for-12 shooting performance, finishing with four points and three steals. Avery Sheets and Nick Brooks added two points apiece. UWGB was led by Benito Flores' 15 points and nine rebounds.
Head coach Todd Lickliter commented afterwards that his team seems to struggle with a different aspect of the game from one night to the next. In the two games in Arizona, Butler's defense was its main downfall. Thursday night against Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the defense was better, but the Bulldogs struggled to rebound. In this game, the defense was sound (UWGB shot 40% overall and 18% from three-point range) and the rebounding was better (UWGB and BU each finished with 36 rebounds, with the Bulldogs pulling down 10 offensive rebounds compared to the Phoenix' 7), but the offense struggled to put points on the board. Butler's top three guards--Sheets, Graves, and Horan--were a combined 3-of-26 from the floor (12%) and 2-of-18 from three-point range (11%). Polk's presence inside was our main source of offense besides the foul line, but once we got down by five we seemed to panic a bit and abandoned any semblance of a post game, instead trying to get points back all at once from three-point line. Needless to say, those shots weren't falling.
Butler hits the road for a pair of games next week. Up first is a trip to Chicago to face the Loyola Ramblers. Game time is Thursday, January 13, at 8:00 p.m. EST.
