DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers clinched their second straight regular season Horizon League title with a 64-53 victory over the visiting Butler Bulldogs. Butler scored the game's first eight points, and led by 11 points at 13-2 and again at 17-6 with 10:38 left in the half. UWM slowly clawed its way back, but the Bulldogs were able to push their lead back to nine on a Bruce Horan three-pointer to make it 27-18 with 2:56 to go. That would mark the final time Butler scored in the half, as UWM used an 8-0 run to pull within one at 27-26 at halftime. An Adrian Tigert basket to start the second half gave the Panthers a lead they would not lose, and a three-pointer from Ed McCants capped a 13-0 run spanning both halves for UWM. Brandon Crone finally ended Butler's scoring drought with a jumper at the 17:53 mark to make it 31-29. Butler spent the remainder of the game playing catch-up, but the Panthers were able to keep the Bulldogs at least a basket away from catching them. A Nick Brooks basket pulled Butler within three on two occasions, 52-49 at the 5:53 mark and again at 54-51 with 4:42 to go. But the Panthers ended the game on a 10-2 run, earning the HL title outright with a 64-53 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Brandon Polk. Brandon had his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. He was 7-of-10 from the foul line, accounting for all but one of Butler's free throw attempts.

Crone led the Bulldogs in scoring with 14 points along with six rebounds and three assists. Bruce Horan added 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting from three-point range to go with eight rebounds. A. J. Graves and Brian Ligon finished with four points and three rebounds each, and Brooks also had four points. Avery Sheets added two points. UWM was led by McCants' 22 points and the 21 points and 14 rebounds of Joah Tucker.

Once again, failure to score at the end of halves coupled with rebounding woes led to Butler's demise, but this time the turnover bug big the Dawgs as well. Although UWM only outrebounded Butler 42-36, they pulled down 20 offensive rebounds leading to 20 second chance points. Butler turned the ball over 15 times while forcing just four UWM miscues, which gave the Panthers a 19-5 advantage in points off turnovers. Butler may have lost more than just the game: Ligon went down with an apparent knee injury in the second half, and it didn't look good. It seemed to be his left knee this time and not his right (in which he tore an ACL a year ago). No official word on his status yet.

Butler takes a one game break from HL play when they host the Valparaiso Crusaders as part of ESPN's Bracket Buster Saturday. Game time is Saturday, February 19, at approximately 2:00 p.m. following the conclusion of the Butler women's game. Hope to see you there.
