DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

A late comeback attempt fell short as the Butler Bulldogs saw their season come to an end with a 61-57 loss at Wright State in the opening round of the Horizon League tournament. The two teams played to a 23-23 halftime tie, with A. J. Graves and Brandon Polk accounting for 20 of Butler's 23 points. It remained a close contest to start the second half. Butler held a 33-31 lead following a Graves three-pointer, but WSU reeled off 11 straight points to take a lead they would not lose at 42-33. The Bulldogs closed to within two at 44-42, but a 13-5 WSU spurt gave the hosts their biggest lead of the night at 57-47. A late rally, capped by a pair of three-pointers from Brandon Crone and Graves, pulled the Bulldogs within two points at 59-57 with eight seconds left. But WSU's Jaron Taylor sank both his free throws at the other end, giving the Raiders a 61-57 victory.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Polk and Graves. The two newcomers played like seasoned veterans, combining for 41 of Butler's 57 points and shooting 16-for-27 from the floor (59%). Polk finished with game-highs of 24 points and nine rebounds, while Graves added 17 points.

Crone finished with six points, six rebounds, and four assists. Bruce Horan finished with three points, the third time this season WSU limited him to that total. Gary Patterson also had three points. Jamie Smalligan had two points and five rebounds off the bench. Avery Sheets also finished with two points. WSU was led by DaShaun Wood's 17 points.

Butler finishes with its first losing record since the 1992-93 season. Inconsistency plagued this team, and it seemed to go only as far as its perimeter shooting would take it. Hopefully the players and staff can learn from this season, work hard in the offseason, and come back next October healthy and ready to put a winning record on the books next season.
