DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs lost their third Horizon League home game of the season as the Wright State Raiders overcame an 11-point second half deficit en route to a 59-54 victory at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The two teams went back and forth to start the game, with WSU holding a 9-8 lead at the 14:09 mark. Butler then went on a 10-2 run to take a seven point lead at 18-11, their largest lead of the half. The Raiders responded with a 10-2 run of their own to regain the lead at 21-20. A Bruce Horan three-pointer put the Bulldogs back on top 23-21, and they would remain in the lead for the remainder of the period, getting a Gary Patterson three-pointer just before halftime to take a 28-24 lead into the locker room. Butler overcame foul trouble in the opening frame, getting whistled for 11 fouls, including coach Todd Lickliter's first technical foul of the season. Four of the five starters finished the half with two fouls apiece. The Bulldogs pushed their lead out to 11 at 44-33 with 12:22 left. There was quite a battle for a loose ball just ahead of the 12:00 mark, with both teams sending multiple players to the floor. When the dust had settled, the teams went to their respective sidelines for the 12:00 media timeout as the crowd voiced its appreciation of the hustle that was displayed. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, whatever momentum they gained from that play was left on the sidelines, because the Raiders scored the game's next 12 points to take a 45-44 advantage with 7:39 left. An Avery Sheets three-pointer finally ended the drought for Butler, and the Bulldogs would eventually push their lead back out to five points on two occasions, the latter of which came on a pair of Sheets free throws with 3:52 remaining to put the Bulldogs in front 54-49. That would be the last points Butler put on the board, as the Raiders ended the game on a 10-0 run to earn a 59-54 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Polk. Brandon finished with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two blocked shots.

Sheets led the Bulldogs with 14 points. A. J. Graves also finished in double figures with 12 points along with three assists. Nick Brooks added nine points and three rebounds. Horan and Patterson each finished with three points, while Brian Ligon added two. Zach Williams led four Raiders in double figures with 17 points in addition to six rebounds.

Butler's two big scoring droughts in the second half corresponded exactly with a pair of rebounding droughts. The Bulldogs pulled down just six rebounds in the second half, and none of them came during either the 12-0 run or the 10-0 run. For the game, WSU outrebounded Butler 33-17, including 14 offensive rebounds which led to 18 second chance points for the Raiders. Particularly damaging were a pair of offensive put backs, one each by Williams and Drew Burleson, during WSU's 10-0 run to close the game. The rebounding woes have not gotten better, and any team which has made a concerted effort to crash the offensive glass against Butler winds up with a large rebounding advantage and a ton of second chance points. That, coupled with the Bulldogs' inability to hold a lead down the stretch, has been the most frustrating aspect of this season, particularly when it happens at Hinkle.

Things will get no easier for Butler as the Bulldogs embark upon a road trip which has them playing three games in the span of five days. First up are the Cleveland State Vikings. Game time is Thursday, January 27, at 7:00 p.m. EST.
